Not exactly. I don't think people really feel that way, at least I hope they don't.

why are you comparing a macintosh laptop with a pc desktop system? that's not fair at all.
btw... you can use the backend system of Mac OSX (darwin) on a pc for free. its not quite fully developed, but its kinda fun to play with. http://www.opendarwin.org
all you opensource junkies have another reason to back apple. they open up their backend code. the proprietary part is the GUI and such that communicate with the backend.
oh and yes.. you can switch mac/pc memory. they're using.. or at least were using, the same sdram dimms. I took one out of a mac and stuck it in a pc.. worked great.

It is fair. It's a PC laptop.
Fastest apple I could afford:
http://store.apple.c.....19.3.1.1.0?15,5
Fastest PC I could afford (bought):

a) Yes, Macs are (about) 2x as fast per clock cycle, but I got a pc that was twice the mhz.
c) I got DVD and CDRW.
d) I got twice the RAM.
e) 14" screen instead of 12.1"
I paid $1,199. (plus tax)
I'm not an opensource junkie. That's a stereotype that is just as bad as calling microsoft whores microsoft whores, or mac elitists mac elitists.
The memory thing: Hm. I guess the only mac I've taken apart was really old
By the way-- AMD R0X0RZ Intel's S0X0RZ. Even though I have 2 intels. Sigh.

twice the mhz but with a celeron processor.. ewwww
And the reason i thought you were comparing it with a pc desktop was because you mentioned a $300 price tag. i misunderstood what you said.. read it too fast i guess
that 12.1 ibook is really slick. its sooo portable i want one. the 14.1 ibook doesn't carry much of a premium in price anymore either. PLUS, with the new ibooks, you can easily get 5 hours of battery time or even more. The clockspeed is now gated through software and is dynamically clocked from... 200-600mhz.. or something liek that. I dont' remember the tech specs exactly. 5 hours off of one charge... *drool*
