Alright --- supposing I need to update my drivers, how would I go about that? After I got a virus and had to completely reformat my computer, I went through that.

And my wired internet cord should still work alright?

Btw - I'm burning my install disc right now :-)

Do you have another computer with internet access? You shouldn't run into any issues but in case you have issues the ubuntu forums are a good resource.

Yes, I could hop onto my dad's computer, which is sitting right next to me, and ask about things either on the ubuntu forums or on here.

But the installation walkthrough I'm using has instructions for partitioning the hard drive, so hopefully I'll be able to hop back onto the windows portion.

As last resorts, I have my win98 CD and I know a few guys who are really good with computers.

When you are done burning your disc, make a backup of your current system.

Back up Back up Back up.

That way when you get a virus, it's easy to bounce back from it.

So customization is one of the things that sets Linux apart - just like it's doing for Firefox?

would you buy a car with the hood welded shut? Thats what you are doing when you buy Windows or OSX. If you want to change something, too bad. A lot of the power of Linux is from choice. I can tell the computer what to do, instead of me doing what the computer wants to achieve something similar to what I wanted. You have full control over your computing experience. Which ranges from changing the way the windows work, to if need be writing code into an application to add functionality you want. The first is available with Windows by downloading more and more and more software slowing your system, the second is impossible.

coiencedently you get insane reliabilty. In the 6 years I've been running linux, I've only had the eqivalent of a blue screen of death once, and that was when I was messing with experimental drivers.

Thanks for the input guys.

#2; when you say backup.... what do you mean?

I really don't have anything on this system I care dearly about, my software can be reinstalled and my documents I could care less about.

Well then you're set. When we talk about "backups!" we mean to make copies of everything you'd rather not lose... Work documents, other important stuff, iTunes collection, porn, that sort of thing. ;)

Burn it all to DVDs, stick it on an external hard drive, do something with it so that if something were to happen to your main computer, you wouldn't lose *everything*.

Well.... all my school assignments have been turned in, my programs are all freeware, and my web programs are all already online (we won't get into how functional they are though, lol). My music is on my dad's computer --- mine's not compatible with the Zune software (I got it because it was eighty bucks, okay?), and besides I only buy hard discs so I could sit down and rip them all again (though I'd rather not).

So, once I get the stupid CD working I'm set --- I'm trying it from my dad's computer, if that doesn't work, I'll try a different download location, and then as a last resort order the stinkin CD online.

Hey I have a Zune and a Nano. IMO - the Zune has potential. Potential to become a 30GB HD once I get a bigger IPod. That interface for zune sucks balls

Hahahaha. That's pretty much how I feel. The iPod users are like "wow!" when they see it, simply because it's new and they haven't seen it before. But trust me, if I had the cash, I'd have an iPod.

You'll have to let me know how setting it up as an external HD works out for you, knowing microsoft they've probably configured it to only allow mp3, WMV, and ASP files.

If that is legit... then there is hope!

Quality really sucks.

Bah, my age old computer is 64 mb short in terms of RAM. I'm trying to locate some but PC100 cards are hard to find.
