Ok time for a quick *Bump* I plugged my laptop back in and the problem is happening on linux again. The WiFi light stays on as if telling me in Range even though I am using the LAN connection right now. I don't know if this is the cause or not. It apparently is working when I am running off battery power but not when I am plugged in.
Maybe it's some power saving thing with your wifi card. Can you eject the device & then try to power down?

Let me see if there is a way to disable or tweak the settings in device manager

Device Manager *shivers* why don't you use ifconfig eth0 down??
You can substitute eth0 for whatever the device name is. Is it possible that your shutdown scripts are somehow skipping over turning off the device?

Well thats what I am wondering now, it appears something isn't shutting down but I can't figure out what.
Also I was going to try using acpi=force in the grub on the kernel line. I tried other methods and totally hosed my startup. I had to edit the kernel from boot menu and then fix the grub file after about a half hour of cussing out this laptop. I hope I am not harming my HD. I just got this baby a month ago.
-- Well come to think of it, the problem is shutting down, not the reloading portion. I am not to sure messing with the kernel is going to matter unless there is a way to Halt or force close all apps on power down.

the acpi=force atleast gave me some information. Something about and my alzheimers just kicked in but had the number 15. and it made a mention of eth0 & eth1 as well. then a cursor was blinking at the bottom of the screen with nothing more from that point on.
There is an LTS coming out in April Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy and apparently a new release of a kernel. Apparently there is a known bug, but everyone is having different issues. I think I might just hang tight till the release is out and then mess with this some more, till then i will limit my hard reboots.
-- Update #3 - A shutdown actually works, the reboot seems to get hung up now but atleast gives messages. I will try and make note next time that happens. Atleast I can do a shutdown safely by using acpi=force at end of kernel line in Grub.

You don't want to put an option into your kernel until you know (that it does or ) how it works.
Basically, the kernel is compiled with your hardware modules (drivers, if you will) & other options on running your OS. You can have a smaller kernel by running these things manually, outside of the kernel. Or, you can compile them into your kernel & you'll have less to load once the OS starts up, so things should run smoother, & take less time to boot. Either way, it's either going to work or it's not going to work. Putting it into the kernel shouldn't make any difference.
