I've only had on experience with them, coming out of a restaurant in the city (Pittsburgh) a man approached me and my family and was begging for money. Before I could even get a word out both my parents (who work at the same company) simultaneously said "Doug?! Is that you? Doug Johnson"

The guy looked up and went "oh shit, please don't tell anyone about this please!!!???"

Here it was a guy that my parents work with. Lived in a nice house, drove a nice car, at the time was making 60,000 a year according to my parents, and he was out begging on the street at night for money.

It can sometimes be more profitable than working. Think about it, hit a downtown hotspot you could potentially score $100 - $200 a day. Thats a pretty chunk of change for a little self humiliation.

I have a pretty keen sense of who deserves it and who doesn't.

Well a few friends of mine and me were going to the NYC auto show last year and some guy came up to us asking for money. well when we said no and he was in front of us, he waited for us to pass and started following us. He just kept asking and bugging us to the point where my friend spotted a cop and we walked by the cop car. The guy stopped following us, but it was really annoying. We didnt want to be rude or anything, but we were getting ready to tell him off.

I love how people think they are so tough when they are bigger than you. Me and my neighbor were in new york city about a month ago just to walk around. Well some guy who must have been 6'2" or so and pretty built was walking straight towards us. No one else was around, and this guy could have been walking on the other side of the platform. Well my friend always carries a knife and not a little one. This guy was probably 10 feet away and my friend pulled it out and the guy goes "Woah, I just needed directions" and walked away fast. Well if you actually needed directions, why not just ask us from 10 feet away, as long as you can hear what we say, it shouldn't make a difference.

Living in DC is the worst. I hate going on to Georgetown or anywhere downtown sometimes. They come out in droves at night, too.

I remember one day I was on my way to work and this girl was on the side of the street. She was playing a guitar with a sign saying that she was trying to get a ticket home or something like that. I got few dollars out of my pocket to give to her, then out the blue, this dude comes and says, 'Since you are helping' and held out his hand. I just laughed and called him funny and went on my way.

Other time, I was coming home from work. I work at night, so this is during the morning rush hour. There was this dirty, fat, bra-less, homeless lady in a stocking cap (I know this is a terrible image) running up to people cars and knocking on their windows. She didn't get to mine since the light was changing and she decided to go to the other other side of the intersection, but who knows what she was saying to folks.

Since I'm ranting. How come every time I go to 7-11 or CVS there's always some kid trying to sell me some overpriced crap? Its always the same stuff but different 'causes'.

That's it.

ugh.... DC..... I lived by GWU for a while.... Foggy Bottom..... anyway... the curb was lined up with beggars when I left for work every morning and when I came home every night.... If I had given a dollar to every bum on the street, I would have had to join them within a month.

Oh D.C., Man oh man... The memories came rushing back when I saw that.
I used to live in Woodbridge, I worked for Connors out in Annadale, and my route was in D.C. I can't tell you how many times I sat in that damn traffic wanting to run one or two bums down.... They corner you in your car. I used to tell them I'd pay them $10.00 to go punch that bum over there in the face. By the time the fight was over, I'd be 6 blocks away with my $10.00.
