"innocent Virgins Dialer"

Posted 15 August 2002 - 07:14 AM

a couple of times in the past week i've booted my laptop and found "innocent virgins dialer" on my desktop, which offers to dial in to porn for me. i never visit porn sites, so i don't know where it's coming from. any ideas? and how i can prevent it?

it's simple enough to remove since it's just a single exe and 2 shortcuts, but it's annoying. :)

Cmon now..

I'd say, to get porono ads, icons, etc 99% of the time its from a porno site. No need to deny it!
Any family members on your comp?

The solution: tell your house hold to stop going to porn!

:D

no, I'm the only one who uses my computer, and I guarantee it did not come from me visiting any questionable sites.

Which, of course, is why I'm asking if anyone knows where this might have come from.

Are you 100% certain no one else has used your machine?

Have you installed any software that may have contained trojan installs?

I have read similar questions for other dialers, homepage changers, and redirect programs.

I'd start by checking your history and cookies. Search your hard drive back to the date you first remember it appearing on your desktop, and look for modified dirs and/or files.

A lot of these apps aren't always named what you think. Check your start-up folder also. Sometimes an installer will be tucked away there. Clear your history, temp folder, cookies, and temp internet files.

i live alone, so i'm sure i'm the only one using it.

i did check to make sure it's not reinstalling every time i boot, so somehow i managed to get it twice in the past three days.

i haven't installed anything unusual...hm, I did install SWiSH a couple of days ago... I don't *think* that would have a trojan, but I could be wrong (I used to have an old version, no problems, but I just downloaded the new version, so who knows...).

thanks for the ideas. :)

Get a nice updated anti-virus package and AdAware.

Somehow I had casino gambling software put on my computer from a popup ad I didn't think I clicked. I wouldn't doubt that this is a similar fluke, but I would bet AdAware can take care of it.
