I'd save the cash and do a strict crossover. Unless you see the need for a switch in the near future.
If you go for hardware, I'd have to suggest 3Com... I haven't had any trouble with any of thier products under Linux or Windoz.

yea, the only reason i was really thinking switch, is for like when chris comes over sometimes and that way he could just plug in like i do at his house. and anyone else for that matter. but i guess i could just set that up when the time comes and save some cash for now eh? thanks slashy.

I'll admit, that would be nice.
Just hate to see that first paycheck disappear so quickly.
You'd have to figure the amount others come over wanting to connect via LAN...

well, my first paycheck isnt gonna be that large anyways, prolly just enough to do the lan. im only getting paid for my first 2 days of work. everything else (the other 200 bucks i earned this weekend) falls under the next pay period and i wont get it till september 7th. *tear*
anyways, my house isnt that big, so i pretty much figured a 4-6 port switch would prolly meet all my needs, ever.

I have a Linksys 10/t hub Ill let go for $5 it worked fine when I was Using it but a little on the slow side compared to 10/100. My access point has a switch and I dont need a nother network segment

Eh, get a router. One of these days you are gonna get broadband. So get a router with a switch. I got a nice Linksys 4prt router for about 80 bucks at best buy.

i dont see why highspeed\broadband companies would ever not like you owning a router, they just dont give you any help on it, cannot see anything wrong with them.

For all intensive purposes if all your going to do with your network is share the internet connection all you really need is a hub... While a router/switch is nice it isn't practical to go overkill on the hardware.

you want overkill?
my dad decided it would be nice to re-wire our house, and in the process he's going to add a network point to every room in the house save the toilets and kitchen
in addition to that we have a router and will soon have an 8 port hub hidden away in the garage, and I will have a 5 port hub in my room to accomodate my two computers and friends who might wanna come over
in total there will be network points in 8 rooms, one of them being the office where the router is, and I will be able to connect 4 pc's in my room to the network
how cool is that, even if it is a little over the top, my dad's great
btw, I would recommend a basic 10/100 hub for your network, they're simple to expand on and pretty cheap.

wow, that sounds really cool,
altough it is probably just as expensive, but still super sweet,
very nice indeedy.
I have a simple crossover, altough i want to get a router, so i can dualboot without needing to worry about network uptime.
I know that you dual boot sloth, so that might be something to think about and consider, cause if you are rebooting, or if you dont have the proxy running, or the main machine aint running, no connection.
Also to watch out for is my broadband isp is not compatible with switched cause they only allocate 1 IP and have to have a valaid MAC address, that probably wont be the case for many others, but it might be a little catch.
Fun Fun...

why?
Because if they disallow them, it will require you to get a 'second ip' which is 10$extra per month.
Thats why. its called greed
