VLite For Vista

Posted 03 April 2008 - 07:35 AM

I recently read and article about this program called VLite. You run it on your Vista machine and it gives you the options of what you want running and allows you to cut down on a lot of excess things Vista runs that you don't need running.

Has anyone used this or know anything more about it?

VLite is actually a pre-installation tool for Vista. Once you have installed Vista you would have to reinstall it to take advantage of this application.

That I don't know. The application is still in it's beta phase so there really isn't much documentation on it available. Sorry I don't have a more definitive answer for ya.

Not a problem at all. Thanks for the help though. I think I'll wait and see how it turns out before I attempt to use it.

The application is just a front end for modifying the registry. All its going is change the registry values for various options you want to turn off or on. Its just like doing it threw the control panel, but brings everything to one interface.

Do you think this is something worth doing?

To be honest not really, because it dose not take to long to change the properties in vista.

However it will simply it because some features are hidden around so I could see the uses.

I was under the impression that vLite was exactly like nLite, but for Windows Vista. Give it an unmodified Vista disk, and it'll slipstream updates, service packs, drivers, and even some applications. It also allows you to set it up for a completely unattended install and configure a whole plethora of options for post-install.

But the greatest thing, in my opinion, is to remove cruft. I mean honestly, I don't need support of ISDN, or legacy printers, or any number of other things. You can remove large chunks of the OS.

Will this break any future updates? It might, if you remove the wrong part. But they're usually pretty well marked. So long as you're actually reading the text on screen, it should point out things to say "You probably shouldn't remove this..."

Of course, then it burns your new installation cd for you. :)

All my Windows XP installs have been remastered with nLite, and I've used vLite a couple times as well.

I actually tried to do a vLite today, as I was tired of the feature bloatedness of Vista, and the inability to stop the clutter from installing. I spent about 40 minutes carefully selecting all of my options.. when it comes to creating the iso...

"Sorry, vLite.exe encountered a problem and needs to close. Sorry for the inconvenience." Wow that was like a step over inconvenient. Silly betas! :P

That happened using vLite on Windows XP with .NET framework 3.5.

EDIT: And I was using the latest beta release fyi. :)

vLite is for vista, nLite is for XP, that might be a good indication why it encountered a problem*

*Problem = User

Ohh burn!

I was running vLite on Windows XP. I was using a Vista disc, with the application. I wonder if it can accept XP discs... :D

I don't think so. nLite is still actively developed. The Vista install process an the XP install process are sufficiently different that it would take a lot of work to merge the two. It *may* happen at some point in the future, but I don't think it will any time soon.

And as to the crash, well, it *is* beta software. :)

You should be able to rerun vLite, *only* select "Create ISO", and point it at the Vista folder you were using.. The folder will already have your drivers slipstreamed, and your options set.
