Ibm To Build Germany's Biggest Computer

Posted 21 August 2002 - 07:30 PM

The new computer, worth well over $10 million, was purchased by Germany's Juelich Research Center and will be installed next year at its Central Institute for Applied Mathematics, otherwise known as ZAM.

There, scientists from a number of disciplines will use the supercomputer to conduct research in physics, chemistry, life sciences and environmental sciences.

The new computer, which will be based on 37 IBM eServer p690 systems using IBM's Power4 processor, will offer a peak performance of 5.8 teraflops, meaning it will be capable of making 5.8 trillion mathematical computations per second.

According to IBM, the boost in computing power will give researchers at ZAM 13 times more performance than they have available from their fastest system.

The new agreement is the latest in a string of supercomputer deals landed by IBM this year.

Indeed, thanks to research projects in biotechnology and to government spending, the adoption of supercomputers has grown, helping boost not only research but also the bottom lines of companies such as IBM, which build the machines.

Once the new supercomputer is built, it will become a part of Germany's grid of supercomputers and ultimately connect with Europe's supercomputing grid, IBM said.

5.8 Teraflops? man, Mr.Data better watch out...

who's gonna design the cooling system for that?? lol

Dude if they could pack a punch of 5.8 teraflops into ONE SINGLE processor, I'd so be there. Windows would load so fast....even WindowsXP!

errm... yeah. it would be a lil speedy...
ha.

they dont even have a good way to program one of those comps do they?
i know us scientists had a big ol pain in the ass when trying 2 get the crays to work to full potential, i still dont think they do.

wait I just thought of this.....a 5.8 teraflop processor is jack without....a fast access HDD.........1,000,000,000 rpm HDD!!!!! WAHOO!!!!!!! Imagine the cooling unit...it'd take up a whole room or more! LOL! or you'd have to run the whole thing in a liquid nitrogen cooled chamber.....hahahahaha

lol
the processor and harddrive would be submerged in liquid-nitrogen WITH dry-ice in the liquid nitrogen & Freon Radiators goin through it
and you can add a little menthol for taste :)

Freon? yea and we'd end up destroying the entire ozone layer.....more like Puron.....no CFCs = save the ozone! w00000t!

haha, damn per-clock animation.

I think that the HD speed is dramatically increased, most likely by scsi raid (only supercomputer style)

and it's most likely multi processor. 5+ Teraflops in one chip? that sounds like a firestarter.

it probably is in only one or two chips
it is very possible to do that kind of thing, the mobo is probably copper-coated, and the heatsink is probably huge, but it IS possible...

forget all that, I'm waiting for the advent of quantum computers ;)

eliminate the need for size and coolants...

Just look at the AMD SledgeHammer's heatsync and underside! That thing has like over 920 pins and its heatsync is HUGE!
