The XBox Linux Project released a press release with information on the first successful run of Linux on the XBox.
They are able to boot Linux either from flash memory or CD-ROM. Though they still need to fit the box with a modchip to allow it to run unsigned code, this could easily be a beginning to the end of Microsoft's grip over the XBox's use. Xbox Linux will soon give users a choice to connect to the Internet using the service of their choice, using regular browsers, and run any Linux app for free. They will also be able to play any audio and video format without restrictions set by the 800 lb. gorilla.
- "Future releases of Xbox Linux are planned to fully support all Xbox hardware (video, audio), as well as standard keyboards, mice, webcams etc., so that it can be used just as an ordinary computer, but at a significantly lower price. The Operating System is made available under terms known as the GNU GPL, which mean that the software may be copied freely at no charge."
