If you are trying to avoid things owned/created by AOL or an AOL company, I think it is going to be harder than you think.

I don't like the AOL client either, however, I used to work for MapQuest.com and we were bought out by AOL. The only way AOL changed our product was to place their adds on the site, and add a netscape bar across the top. (and they lied to me several times, layed me off and and closed the office
) Other than that, It is still a great tool and I use it often.

They own a lot of stuff!!

wow, you guys can argue about anything can't you?
the way i look at it as a web designer is it doesn't matter what my personal preference is for creating a site, it's gotta work in all browsers because there is always someone out there using a browser that i may not care for or personally support. i've made it a habit to use, frequently every browser available to me just so i can know the ins and outs of each one of them. i'm at the mercy of the internet users that visit my sites. when my site reports consistantly say over months of time that no body is using netscape 4.x i will stop designing for that, until then i'm shooting myself in the foot and saying screw you to a possible customer.
anyways it been interesting reading your points, fellas
and hey supernova, i live in lancaster too and currently work with two guys that use to work at mapquest, Scott and Paul you know either one of them? IM or email me sometime

Like everything in this business, that all depends on your target audience. If your target audience is old people who have had their computers for 10 years but don't know how to upgrade their browsers and/or are still on 14.4 connections, then perhaps you have to cater to their obsolete browsers. That's about the only situation I can think of where it might be worth it. Check out this article: To Hell with Bad Browsers.
