Win 2k Server: Part 2

Posted 07 September 2002 - 03:43 PM

ok, a completely new problem has come up. now, the machine seems to 'hibernate' (or something) randomly (ie. when you are actually using the machine.)

I have no idea what is causing it. BIOS? 2k power settings? gremlins?

all I know is that its hella annoying. anyone got ideas?

ps: in general, the boot cycle goes: post, mem check, starting win2k, then it crashes (sleeps) just before the splash screen comes up....

edit: pps: sitting at BIOS (~0% load) the chip is registering 127F....

Is This A Good Question/Topic? 0

i assume by sleeping that you lose video and the power light turns orange. right? i used to have this problem with 2k as well. it was the motherboard. most likely its a device/device driver issue. on boot it can't initialize and 2k tanks. 2k is meant to run stable and if it can't it doesn't know what to do. try swapping out components if possible with another machine. i bet it'll be the board. what kind of CPU do you have? 127F is fine for an AMD. they tend to run hot. i'd be concerned if it were an intel chip.

i thought i could be the MB, but not what i wanted to hear. at this point, the system can't even attepmt 2k, it just goes into a reboot cycle (ie. post, SCSI, start 2k, reboot....)

$#!t, $#!t, $#!t!!! i guess that i'll just have to wait ti fix it then (though I *may* have a spare board (same type) around here somewhere...)

thanks

well vet, i replaced the mobo & she's doing the same damn thing again (actually worse, she won't even post!)

this makes it one of two things (AFAIK):
- CPU
- PSU

...right? i mean, i've already shorted the CMOS w/o avail, so I reckon that is all that's left.

you might also try pulling all the cards out except for video and see if it still happens. then put them back in one at a time and find the culprit that way. do you know anyone who'd let you borrow a CPU to test in your board?

ok vet, heres how today went: (PS, this is open to anyone else's critique as well)

changed video cards :: nothing (ie., not post but everything powered up)
pulled all but one RAM (known to be good) :: nothing
changed power supply :: nothing
changed proc :: absolutely nothing (PSU decided to die!)
changed PSU again (back to the 'old one) :: powerup but no BIOS post (not even video)

...so what have I learned? nothing! I think that its just time to give up on this machine until I can get a new board/proc/heatsink (maybe this weekend). No BeOS, no Win2k server, no 'good times'.

Edit:: I've chosen the new board and (thanks to a little 'business' financing) am getting:
Biostar M7VKD SDR SND ::link::
AthlonXP 1900+ OEM ::link::
Volcano7 SocketA/370 Copper ::link::

"hopefully" this will get my server back up for about $170.
note: Server is used loosly, its mainly gonna be my Win2k box (for ASP dev. & file storage) while the current 'Wintermute' becomes BeOS only (the only *nix-like OS I've found myself to use/like).

At this point, I figure all of them are fried (I've check the RAM, cards & drives in my current deck; they seem to be fine.)

Oh well, there's a little more magic smoke as a gift to the gremlins....
