Hi all, just wondering if anyone has any experience with VOIP over a VPN connection. The company I work for is considering VOIP for remote users who work from home. These users connect to the company network via VPN. I've been doing some testing with the VOIP setup. The VOIP is not through a SIP, the company is using their own network for the service.
Here is what I've observed. If I make or receive a call over the LAN or WAN the clarity is excellent on both ends. If I receive a call using a VPN connection at home the clarity is just fine on both ends also. The problem is when I make an outbound call over a VPN connection. In this case I can hear the other party loud and clear, however they cannot hear me. I am told I sould like a mute button is being pressed on and off really fast as I talk.....very broken up.
Now keep in mind neither I nor the Telecom dept of my company has little or no experience with VOIP let alone over a VPN connection. We are trying to find out why the bad connection on outbound calls via VPN. Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

This may be localized to your network - perhaps with the upload cap or capability. It may even relate to package routing in place on your network.
My own company uses a complete VOIP setup, and I use it frequently over a VPN connection with no issues. During periods of extreme network traffic, a few packets may be dropped, but that's about it.
