I've seen several things like this. Even some little "programs" that are supposed to speed things up. I would be hesitant to poke around in the registry unless you are sure it works. I'm on cable as well but it is very fast, are you having speed issues with cable?
Anyone else know anymore about this?

I wouldn't try this really... For one thing, you really don't have much control over how fast your internet connection is, the cable company has copmlete dominion over that. unless you are a l33t.

These programs and such that speed things up aren't increasing your connection speed, but probably keeping windows from writing internet files into temp, or doing just the opposite, loading everything in to a temp. i don't trust them and they're full of ads and you can never uninstall them. but issues w/cable? wth are you doing that requires so much speed? if u need teh speed so much get a T1

If you are not to sure about the regestry on www.speedguide.net there are registry tweaks for cable and DSL. and they do work on my old swbell dsl I was getting 384Kb down and 128 up applied a regestry patch and speeds went up to 1.5Mb down / 128Kb up. I think that when the PPPoE soft ware is installed they modify the registry to give you the Least amount of bandwidth possible. I have not noticed any speed increase on the cable with theese patches but then again

This also sketchs the line of illegal.
I would point you to providers terms of service. Such uncapping of your cable modem is easily noticed in highly populated areas where your neighbors bandwidth may suffer due to your changes. Companies like ATT, Earthlink, and a few others have activily combated such abuses. I have even seen two fellas begging to have there cable service re-instated on an ATT Broadband help forum. Some have even been prscuted, I can think of at least 12 or so here in Ohio, up near Cleveland and Toledo I believe.
Use caution, and read your terms of service agreement... Or you could soon be using a 56kps dial-up from the county jail libaray.

I've also heard that raising the RWin will increase speed, although I have tried it abd haven't noticed much difference. I used a program called DrTCP because it will also make other changes like MaxMTU and stuff. I guess the reason it never really worked for me is that I never seem to have a problem reaching my max limits set by Comcast of 1.5 down and 128 up. I would think that it would be more beneficial to those who are having a problem reaching the speeds they should be getting.
You can check it out here: http://www.dslreport...ront/drtcp.html
And this will explain what it does: http://www.dslreports.com/faq/578
I had heard that the only way to really get beyond the speeds set by Comcast is to make some sort of changes to the modem internally, but I don't know enough about them to mess with it.

That's more what I had in mind in my post.
I would think optimizing your connect to it's limit set by the provider is no biggy.

Fortunately Comcast doesn't give the option of tampering with the modem anyway. I have had several techs hre at the house in the last few weeks due to some odd spikes I've been getting when running pingplotter. My latency to Yahoo, for example would hold steady at 65ms nd every 5 minutes or so, would spike off the chart at 999+. They replaced every foot of cable from the pole to the modem and then replaced the modem itself and it cleared up. But it also gave me the chance to ask them a lot of stuff. Apparently your speed is set at the node now and there is almost nothing you can do to either the modem or the RWin settings to overcome the speed cap.
The tweaks do help with throughput, to increase transfer rates for uploads and downloads. And they will help with latency if you never seem to reach the capped limit. But, since I am always within a few percent of the limit +/-, and my transfer rate is good, I think, at about 125k per sec. When I was on DSL through MSN DrTCP really helped. Also in the network settings for the adapter, it helped to set the packet size to small with DSL for some reason.
I saw the article from a Canadian news service about the people who uncapped their modems a while back (proprietary equipment) and all the pictures showed them being led away in handcuffs. Definately not worth downloading stuff a little faster. Especially when it would be a federal crime in the US.

and with the new laws You could be held as a cyber terrorist and tried for treason and shot. Worst case senario but I did hear of a guy who got 120 years for installing Seti @ home on the computers where he worked ( in GA) the case was that he stole processing power and was then tried for embezzelment. scary but true I never found out how that one ended though.

i bet u got that from the weird-al song "Its all about the Pentiums"
but anyways i've tried this, using all these proggys that "suposedly" make your connection faster, but the ONLY way is to uncap it. Speed is not an issue with me, but i'd always like more.. 250/KBps from Microsoft is good, and most downloads are 100kbps or more, i still tried this and didnt notice any difference at all. You cant control your modem speed by just changing a single registry setting, you have to do more then that.
