The key is to watch WHERE they are connecting, like yesterday I had some program try to connect through explorer to piracy.somethingorother.com

I of course clicked the Deny button on my firewall :)

ok, the messages pop up 3 times, the first three go to

Quote

239.255.255.250

and the last one goes to

Quote

localhost
(127.0.0.1)

i looked @ support.microsoft.com, and got this page on windows protection errors:
here
and the only one that came close to my problem was this one
that one is the closest i could find. its not my exact message though, mine says

Quote

Windows protection error.  you need to restart your computer.  system haulted

and it says that pops up after upgrading to ME... but it poped up out of the blue 3 months ago (when i had been using ME for about 9 months), without upgrading. so thats all for now. i'm gonna keep browseing around support.microsoft.com, and see if i can find anything else

Cynical Responce:
What you're doing here is mixing rat poison with cyanide and thinking it's safe to drink. First off hardware: have you ever heard anyone praise HP on their computer hardware? I sure as hell haven't. HP makes shitty computers with B-grade hardware in a steel/plastic airtight case. They die of heat-exhaustion in about 2 years. Next software: WINDOWS ME! What do you expect! Windows ME is just 98 with more bugs, I'm surprised with how poor that OS is. My Dell came with ME, and crashed about 100 times in a week (this is on a $4500 system) So I called them up and demanded Win2K. After installing that I think I've blue-screened maybe 3 times in the past year, and all with a good reason.

Maybe if you didn't buy shitty products, and load shitty OSes on them, you wouldn't have more trouble than you do fun. Your computer is controlling you, not you controlling it. Fix that.

Reasonable Responce:
Ok, ok, ok. I realize your mom probably bought you this computer, and you cannot afford a new OS let alone a new PC. My suggestion then is to stop using computers and take up arts and crafts. Problem successfully detoured.

wow.. that didn't help much  ME being shitty, tell me something that i dont' already know, but the fact still remains. Its not like i chose HP (yea, it was a gift), so i didn't have much of a choice. never the less, there ain't no way that i'll give up on my computer and go to

arts and crafts

Vetritus03: u say run it in safe mode or a step by step boot up (please explain, like i said, i'm not mr. hardware), and if it can't access the internet, whats the point in doing it? cause the problems only happen when i'm online.

of course, there's still this unanswered question. thanks to any and all that can give me a hand

the problem ONLY happens when you're online... the something you're doing or something you're running is causing this. AIM? Yahoo messenger? something? anything? anything in the system tray?
those IP addresses look local. a 255.255 yadda IP is usually signature of a subnet mask. the other local host just screams LOCAL. remove your norton software completely and see if it goes away.
you get to the boot menu by tapping the F8 key while booting. you can start tapping the key at the BIOS logo (prolly HP) screen and keep right on tapping it continuously until the ME logo screen appears. you should get the boot menu for safe mode and a step by step startup.
seems to me that when you're on the inter net is the only time your firewall would be able to effect anything. you don't really need a firewall as dial-up connections are dynamicly assigned an IP address each time you connect. that means someone would have to be a good guesser to hack you on any particular occasion that you logon. giv it a shot.

<quote>i think best buy had the easiest solution. remove Norton Internet security. what the hell does it do anyway? are you on cable? </quote>
or you could get a Di-701 router firewall combo for like 10 bucks on clearance at www.dlink.com and get rid of norton but then again i was never fond of semantics products ( except for ghost)

we already covered the fact that a firewall isn't necessary for his current connection method.

ok, thanks Vetritus03... i'll remove norton, and reinstall the antivirus only. but if it happens again, u think that its a hardware problem? and if i remove norton, should i still run it in safe mode for a few hours?

remove both for a day and see if it goes away. if it does re-install NAV. Live-update always seems to pop up every now and then requesting a connection... but i don't think NAV is causing your problem.

ok... when u say 'see if it goes away', you mean the blue screens, restarts, etc., right?

Re: Computer Problems

does it blue screen and/or restart while in windows? or is this just on boot? i was thinking you were only having the explorer problem while in windows. i was also thinking we were assuming your protection errors were hardware issues you were going to t-shoot using all the other methods we talked about earlier. removing norton will only t-shoot the explorer internet access issue.
now, if all your other errors only happen while online... perhaps it's your modem. try another one.
