does it blue screen and/or restart while in windows?  or is this just on boot?  i was thinking you were only having the explorer problem while in windows.  i was also thinking we were assuming your protection errors were hardware issues you were going to t-shoot using all the other methods we talked about earlier.  removing norton will only t-shoot the explorer internet access issue.
now, if all your other errors only happen while online... perhaps it's your modem.  try another one.

no, the 'windows protection error' blue screen usually happens when i'm online, as w/ the random restarts. i also get the screen going black w/ the small vertical green lines at the top of the screen. try a new modem? its not like i've got em lying around.

something i neglected (like a dumbass) to mention before... after formatting one time, i neglected to install norton for a few weeks... i just kept putting it off, and i didn't have any problems... so that might be relevant.

but tomorrow, i'm gonna uninstall norton, install all of my software, and run like that all day. i'll report back what happens.

oh, and i forget who said that i don't need a firewall (was it Vetritus03? i dunno), but i beg to differ. just 5 mins ago, the security alert popped up saying that it was blocking a trojan from gettin into my system... so yea, i'd like to stay w/ the firewall if possible.

oh, and tim (flashages), don't hijack my thread <_<

Update: i uninstalled Norton Internet Security (the firewall part), but i left in the antivirus. I haven't had any problems, but i'm gonna run it like this for about a week to see if i have any problems.

ok, as i said, i uninstalled Internet Security a while ago, but i left Norton antivirus in. so i've been having problems, like random lockups. i'm not sure if it has to do with Norton, so should i unstall the antivirus?

well, i think if you were going to upgrade you'd have already done it. perhaps 98? slightly cheaper solution... hella more stable. of course i still know people who swear by Me...

i'm definately gonna upgrade to xp eventually, i just haven't done it yet cause it would have been a pain in the ass to get all the updated drivers and all. i should mention again that my bro has exactically the same computer, and he hasn't had the problems i have.

What os are u on. If u are on anything lower than windows 2000/XP/NT 4.0 then i would upgrade. Windows me is knowen to have errors like that. I am not sure if Windows 98 has errors like that but i will check.

Remember one mosts of my posts in this catagorie i would just backup (if u can) and start over.

as i've said before, i'm running ME, and as i also said, i've formatted countless times. but i uninstalled norton firewall about 2 months ago (or whenever i made my last post), and i haven't had many problems since... so this post is out of date. and yea, i have to upgrade to XP
