I am trying to install Linux Gentoo on my Compaq Presario C700 but theres a problem, when Gentoo boots up my laptops fan shutdown.
I try to make it through the install, i have my laptop next to me on my desk but i am using Secure Shell to install it from my Desktop (Multi Tasking is nice)
anyway, every once in a while i feel my laptop....its really F*CKING HOT! I can't feel any airflow out of the vents so i issue the command "halt" and shutdown. On reboot my fan spins up to full and blows REALLY REALLY hot air. So.......
I have checked my bios options, no fan controls.
Is there a bash command i can issue to force my system fan to start?
(Remember this is a live environment so i can't install warez yet)
Thanks guys.
Live long and code strong.

I doubt that there are bash commands for the fans, but I could be wrong.
Usually power devices on the mother board are controlled by the ACPI, & if you are running this off a live cd, I'm not sure what the fix would be. If this were an installed distribution, I would suggest compiling advanced power management into your kernel.

Is there a special Argument i can pass to the live cd kernel on boot that will check the acpi to make sure it detected everything correctly?

gentoo acpi would make sure that the ACPI scripts run... Which they're supposed to do automatically. Try booting the gentoo-nofb kernel, and monitor all the init messages and kernel messages for anything ACPI related that seems... Out of the ordinary.
