Toys Toys Toys!

Posted 27 September 2002 - 09:08 PM

FINALLY I got the parts to fix 'Aki'. Thought ya'll might like some pix....

Posted Image
Just a basic shot of what all'n I got.

:: Gigabyte GA-7ZXE Motherboard (for all that SDRAM I still have hangin' aound)
:: Athlon 2000+ XP
:: 512mb SDRAM (to fill out what I have)
:: some rounded cables
:: Volcano7 Socket A/370 (this thing is a monster; see below)

...so these are thpart I've been wanting (literally keeping me up at night!)
The only 'off' thing is the Volcano7

This thing is HUGE. As soon as I unwrapped it, I was wondering about the weight this was gonna put on the the board...

Posted Image
...covering about 1/6th of the board (my estimate) this is easily the largest heatsink I've ever seen (way, way beyond the sink on 'Wintermute'). BTW: Don't 'ever' think about trying to remove one of these babys! It took 2 people to get it back off the board (after AMD 'recommended' pre-fitting; bastards!) I swear, this sink must have a bigger spring that the rear-end of my Tracker!!!!

Took about 2 hours to get everything right (including the requisit plugging the floppy drive in backwards  )

Oh yeah, just forr $#!ts & giggles, heres my sister-in-law when I walked in w/all this stuff (if I mention efficient passive cooling one more time, I think shes gonna loose it!)
Posted Image

...then again, my 2 systems are faster & quieter than my brother's, so.... maybe he'll learn somethin'...

PS: she's got here machine stuffed in this tiny little desk. So much for trying to preach good airflow to the unconverted....

Is This A Good Question/Topic? 0

guess what?

after the usual burn in period, I've come to find the FDD controller is pooched! nadda, nothing! Didn't need the floppy until Sunday, so I never knew.

The worst part is getting that heatsink back off (see above).

ok, now I can quit bitching. via the local hardward network (my friends & me tradin') I am now the proud owner of a GeForce4 4600Ti, gratis. ok, not quite, but it is mine & don't have to put up w/the voodoo 5.5k anymore! (guess i'll throw it into another linux box come Dec.)

can't wait to see the benchmarks B) B) B)

nevermind, I see the difference now (went to thermaltake.com). then again, it is 7 more db. too much for current use (see pic. of sister-in-law). I actually have to shut down every night before 10pm 'cause she can't take the noise 2 rooms away....

but that is pretty damn cool. wonder if they made the spring easier (i'm still debating taking the new mobo back w/the bad FD controller or just live w/it ('cause the volcano7 is *so* hard to take off))

dont take it back guy taking it off can risk damage to the board

dont use a floppy drive, usa a cdrw if u REALLY need a floppy disk get a usb drive

whats more important, a 1.44 megabyte floppy drive or a 144 dollar mobo?

actually it was only a $56 mobo (& still way under warranty), but the actual labor involved (as well as potential risk to the processor itself) are motivating factors to *not* return it.

If anyone is wondering, it came from tcwo.com. I've only once ever had something of theirs die on me (my voodoo 5500, which the replaced immediately).

There's a computer 'show' comming up, so instead of the USB floppy, I think I'll go look for a PCI controller (I'm pretty sure they still exist, but my dinosaur 486 DX/4 needs a new one too (*never* plug a double height 5 1/4" floppy into an AT mobo, ever!!!))

I did it 'cause I *thought* I could port some TRS-80 parts. Instead I burned out the controller card (too much voltage, I reckon....). & don't ask why I want to make this 486 run again, it just is ;) .

Final notes on Aki:

After a week worth of burn in, I think it'll work very nice (esp. once I fill out the RAM).

BTW, finally dumped the dog of a Voodoo. The old scores were around 3500, but now:

That's right, she's now running a GeForce4 4600 Ti. No more hunting hacked together drivers or not having DirectX 8+.... I'm a very happy camper.

heh, I just spent my whole weekend upgrading my shell to litestep, and I couldn't have done it without floppies.

My computer isn't connected to our network, and hence the internet, yet, so I had to download all the relevant stuff, and the (using the wonders of spanning .zip files) put it all on a disk so I could transfer it upstairs to my comp.

The only other option would have been wasting a cdr for it all, and it really isn't worth it.

Floppy Drive = essential still
