Despite earlier suggestions to the contrary (which we didn't believe anyway) Microsoft may be planning an interim version of Windows XP to fill the chasm between last year's rollout of XP itself, and the next big one, Longhorn, which quite possibly won't hit until 2006 or later. According to an eWeek piece by Mary Jo Foley (who we have missed greatly since Ziff Davis hid her in a paid-for newsletter), Microsoft is proposing to reach for the bottle again, having foresworn the demon release cycle treadmill just a few short months ago.

rumors of this have been circling around for awhile now. the best sources i've read speculate that an XPSE (XP second edition type release) would be OEM only. why? the XPSE release would comprise the original XP code with the combined updates of SP1 and a yet-to-be-released SP2. SP2 will of course be as easily obtainable as SP1 recently was. there will be no reason for people who have already purchased XP and installed the latest service releases to buy XPSE.
2006 seems a bit late for longhorn given M$'s usual 2-year rollout of new OSs. of course longhorn is awaiting the new file system from yukon, the next SQL server. yukon is currently behind schedule so its hard to speculate on how fast the windows team can adapt their supposedly revolutionary UI to operate efficiently on the new system.
