The move is off.....

Posted 29 May 2008 - 05:59 AM

Well for the time being my move to Wisconsin is on the back burner. Since Ive hired 3 new programmers, all of whom I know and I know their qualifications and such. Since all 4 of us live in Washington State (3 in Spokane, me out in the boonies) Tim has opened an office in Spokane.

We get to take possession of the office on 13JUNE, right now XO Communication is running Fiber into the office as we will also be hosting the system from there as well. I get an office with a door on it (haven't had one of those for a long time lol), and Tim ordered our work computers (Quad Core, 8GB DDR2, 2 500GB SATA drives, NVIDIA GeForce 8800GTS, dual 23 inch widescreen monitors, etc). Im telling you, this man is making it hard from me to not go into the office everyday lol

Is This A Good Question/Topic? 0

Why does a work computer need 8800 GTS's? :P

Why sounds fishy? Is it really that odd that an employer wants his programmers to be comfortable & happy?

Ive never ran into that before, I normally work places where we have nice equipment and it doesn't take an act of congress to get something upgraded. At Ambassador Programs we all had dual dual core processors, 4GB memory, etc. Even the startup I worked for back in the mid to late 90's we had good equipment for that time.

That is why outsourcing is cheaper ;)
Anyway, I don't have a bad word for my current place (I think I've written in another thread that we have top of the line comps), but I've seen some places where the equipment simply trashed productivity and was literally bad for your health/eyes/whatever.
However the video card mentioned above really seems to be overkill for a developer machine (well, not if you are utilizing it as a GPGPU, or you are a game developer). However it is not a big jump in cost, and it definitely makes the employee happier (It is a bit risky what happens if he gets addicted to a game, or simply can not concentrate on work). Frankly, how much gaming is tolerated at your place, Psycho? (I stuck at gaming because this is definitely a high end card that is only justified by games, it has no advantage in everyday development tasks over a midrange one)

You guys are lucky...I have to write all my code on a piece of paper, and when ready, i have to punch it onto punch cards, then test. Code changes and retests are a bitch.

I can so relate to everything you just said. In fact here is my current program for today (well one of the cards anyway). ;)
