being obviously not serious, though one may think so at first, this is like one of the most absurd articles i've read in a long time...and since i feel like ranting, i'm going to

the guy behaves like only sons can hack, girls can hack, girls aren't all that innocent...and the books he lists, like some of them are on my reading list, does that make me a hacker, no, i'm just into reading computer oriented books and not all of them are really computer oriented they're sci-fi/fantasy books that kindof related to computers, like existing in the matrix.

let's see here:
"Snow Crash" and "Cryptonomicon" by Neal Stephenson
//i've ordered them both, they're sci-fi/fantasy books
"Neuromancer" by William Gibson
//neuromancer, also looked good, i've ordered it, it's a sci-fi/fantasy book
"Programming with Perl" by Timothy O'Reilly
//perl, how dangerous could that be, and it's an O'Reilly book
"Geeks" by Jon Katz
"The Hacker Crackdown" by Bruce Sterling
"Microserfs" by Douglas Coupland
"Hackers" by Steven Levy
"The Cathedral and the Bazaar" by Eric S. Raymond
//give me a break, it's about open source, is there anything wrong with open source

Quote

I encourage all parents to read through this guide carefully. Your child's future may depend upon it. Hacking is an illegal and dangerous activity, that may land your child in prison, and tear your family apart. It cannot be taken too seriously.

do you think he's being sarcastic here, it cannot be taken too seriously

check this out:
How much time does your child spend using the computer each day?
um, let me think here, more time than i probably should, and definately way more than the 45 mins a day that this guy thinks i should be spending on the computer, hmm, i'm on it for hours and hours, and more hours, i'm on it at school, i'm on it at work, i'm on it at home

Is your son obsessed with "Lunix"?
well, i'm taking a lunix class next semester at the university

Has your child asked for new hardware?
yeah, i asked for more ram, i only have 32 mB that's not nearly enough to run all my high tech programs, like flash, oh flash, that's a hackers program oh no....

Is your son struggling academically?

Quote

If your son is failing courses in school, or performing poorly on sports teams, he may be involved in a hacking group

i find it more likely that a kid failing courses in school or performing poorly on sports teams is doing drugs rather than being involved in a hacking group

Is your son becoming argumentative and surly in his social behaviour?
i'm always argumentative, i've always been that way, i'm always right, just ask me, i'll tell you

i guess that i'm innocent on all accounts anyways because i'm a daughter not a son

ok thanks, you know, upon thinking about this, it could be scary...look at the traits that some of us have, we could really be hackers and like not know it or something, we'd be potential hackers...that's a funny thought though, me a hacker, i don't think so :)

Lol. Well.. I think the funniest thing is the "software hackers use." One of the mentioned programs is Flash! So.. I guess the whole Flash industry is just crawling with hackers! Bahaha.

I didn't read it but Nighthawk seemed to give a good play by play and all I can say is that this guys has seen the movie hackers one to many times.  He obviously has not even the slightest idea what he's talking about.  Books hacker would ACTUALLY read:
TCP/IP Books
UNIX Books
Any Books about Krptography, Networking, Firewalls, IIS Server Admin, etc. . . definately not perl.  If you want to be a hacker and can't even figure out perl, bah, you'll never be able to hack the simplest thing. Gees. This guys is lame.

I thought the analyzation of a hackers dress was pretty good.

maybe hacking is not your biggst problem if your child wears this stuff around the house. i suggest a visit to the doctor to check their spinal fluid.

lol.... there are some really ignorant old people out there.

well, i tried to read the article, but adequacy.org obviously sucks and will not display the page in my lifetime. maybe they should hire some hackers to make their cheap site work better.

this guy is so seriously bent.

Quote

BSD, Lunix, Debian and Mandrake are all versions of an illegal hacker operation system, invented by a Soviet computer hacker named Linyos Torovoltos, before the Russians lost the Cold War. It is based on a program called "xenix", which was written by Microsoft for the US government."

you mean linux?  you mean Linus, from Finland?
this has either got to be a joke (hopefully) or there truely are people out there w/a more screwed worldview than Pat Robertson.  Neuromancer, Snow Crash?  What's next, 'The Age Of Spiritual Machines' is their (our?) Koran?
