Anti-virus PUA question

Posted 27 June 2008 - 04:15 PM

Well, I run Sophos Anti-virus and I ran a scan today (for the first time, as it was newly installed), and it found 1 item. EndProcess.exe was found as a PUA (Potentially Unwanted Application). Ever since the Anti-virus put it in quarantine, Internet Explorer has not been closing properly (meaning I have to open the task manager every time and end the process myself). It may happen with other applications, but I have not closed anything but IE since the scan, as I'm posting this soon after it completed the scan.

So I am wondering if this is just a fundamental application that Sophos THOUGHT was a PUA that could kill my processes, or if it really is a bad application.

It seems to be in the bin with all of my other HP computer applications such as Sleep, which I'm guessing suspends execution of something. cmdline, the command line I suppose. WizInstaller, which I think is the Windows Installer Wizard.

I am running Windows Vista Home Premium (32 bit I believe, not sure), since I suppose that would be relevant.

I don't think you have to worry about any of them, though I am not a security expert.

You could try running an online antivirus program and seeing if it comes up with the same results. :^:

Well, the only one I was worried about was EndProcess.exe, since it's the one the anti-virus found as a PUA(of type Hacking Tool) is what it said.

But it seemed like a normal application to end processes similar to the way that the task manager does so...

Well, IE closes fine now for some reason, even though the file is still in quarantine. So I'll just leave it there for now and decide what to do with it later.

Thanks for the help! :) :^:
