Ok so I actually went with Fedora, it's a very nice OS so far, there a couple of things that are bothering me though.

1) I cannot connect to the internet, whether I use a LAN cable or try to go wireless, I am not able to connect to the net, any tips are gretaly appreciated.

2) Less serious but annoying as hell, whenever I close the chess game window that is included in the OS, the screen goes black and after a second or two, I have to re-enter my user name and password. Has this happened to anybody else??? if so what did you do to fix it???

:^: :^: :^: :^:

This used to be an issue with the previous OS versions.
Installing the ndiswrapper driver fixes the problem.

But it comes pre-installed with Ubuntu 8.04 LTS and Fedora 9 so the only possible reason I can think of is that you havent configured your IP Address, Gateway, etc. settings correctly.

It just depends on what you use.If you just want to try,you can do it.But for ordinary use,one system is enough for you to use.Whether linux or windows is ok for anybody.Just for your preference .

Is ndiswrapper included in Ubuntu 8.04?! No way! How do you set it up with your windows drivers?

ndiswrapper AFAIK is only for wireless card drivers. It works, but native drivers are better (and easier to setup). You shouldn't use ndiswrapper unless you have to.

It is possible that your card will work with little-to-no configuration in a newer distro, drivers are added to the kernel in every new release.

If you DO have to use ndiswrapper, it really isn't that bad to setup. Just find a tutorial on Google and follow it. Probably the hardest part will be finding the damn INF files from the Windows driver installer.

-----------------------

I recommend using Google for tutorials. Nothing personal, but you'll need to learn how to use it sooner or later. A well phrased search query can do wonders of good. :)

What network cards do you have? What chess game are you trying to play?

My main computer is Windows (vista) and my laptop is Ubuntu Hardy 8.04 . I have not had very many problems with my Ubuntu laptop since installing it a couple months ago. I have done a lot of programming on there (python,c++,web programming with php and perl, javascript mysql, etc.) And have even done some .Net type programs, although they didnt turn out very well...Mono isnt the best IDE for .Net. Simply put, i like both of my operating systems, If i had a third computer, i would probably put windows xp pro on it just cause i tend to move towards windows. personal preference :P
