Howdy fellas. I gotz meself an old server, a dual 133Mhz and I'm desiring to do a little web serving. I've setup apache etc on the box, and currently I'm running win2K, but given all the security problems, I'm a little leary of going live with the box running windows. I've been reading bout all the folks getting [email protected], but I've not got much experience with any other OS. What's everyone suggestion on what to run when you wanna run a webserver, but don't wanna spend 6 months at the command line setting it up? Security is key!

well, im pretty sure its the same with redhat, but with my MANDRAKE linux, I popped in the cd's, it installed, and the webserver was automatically running. SO, I dont think configuration would be a large problem if you went linux style

If security is really key... OpenBSD or, if your, brave (super paranoid
) OpenVMS
If you stay up on CERTS and patches there should really be little concern. Most attacks are against systems that fail to apply common sense security, apply available patches, and enforce strict password policies.
A lot of cracks/hacks you read about are often the result of failure to do the above.
... And for the love of God, please, please... No Outlook.

I ended up sticking with win2K so far, since I finally got my firewall properly configured, I seem to be pretty safe. One night I started it up without turning on the firewall, and in the morning I had about 150 messages from people saying "Hi! You like to suck C0ck?! Then click ok to view my page!" and "You've been hacked by Chinese!" although no damage was done that I can see, or norton can detect. But still! So far so good... wish me luck!
