Re: Why DIC?
Posted 02 August 2008 - 03:02 PM
I came looking for a community I could contribute to as I came from a background of contributing to a scripting forum for a game, looking for a better past-time.
It was a late night, I was bored, molested by a typeless, classless language called PAWN and decided to look for programming communities. I was thinking about MSDN, but at the time I knew I'd only be a hinderence to people asking for help. I needed a community that could be accepting to the fact I may not be as good as them, but always wanted to be.
I signed up to </DIC> knowing, 'hey, even if it does suck, I'll still have ad-free browsing'. The site was managed well, I came from a background of arrogant helpers (I could probably classify myself one) so I thought I knew what to expect, but my expectations rapidly changed when I introduced myself (I always make sure I go out of my way to introduce people on occasion for this very reason).
If </DIC> were to go offline, I'd feel a lot of void, depression and sadness. I do know what it is like to have a community you love get shutdown because one lazy admin didn't want to operate it anymore, the members created a new site for the community, and eventually the lazy admin had a cry and reopened the forums.

For the life of me, I can't remember how I found this place. All I do remember is that they had code snippets, & took submissions from the general public. I thought it was so cool that they allowed any passer by to offer their input, without 1st passing a zillion "we're l33ter than you" tests, & just forgetting about the new guy anyhow. It truly was about participation, & when you get right down to it, the code. It's about understanding, it's about helping, it's about knowledge. For lack of a better term, I was instantly hooked.

I came here first because I needed help with VB. I didn't realize the caffeine lounge was here, or all the other neato forums either. Later I came back for help with C#. Both times Google listed DIC as a help site.
I stick around because I still need help learning to program. The people here are so helpful and knowledgable, and they don't seem to mind if I try to answer questions right along with them. So what if they know 100 times more than I do, so far. Maybe I'll catch up, someday soon. Whenever I do become really good at programming I will have DIC to thank for a lot of it. Where else can you hang out with professionals and bug them all day with questions? It sure beats on the job training.
This group is my choice over the other help groups I tried because they give the correct advice, and quickly. Other sites don't, in my experience.
Also, like Whizzy said, for the most part, the people here are clever, witty and fun to hang out with.
I feel like I belong here, even though I don't like some of the discussions. I guess it's wise to ignore an offense instead of becoming one. (If I don't like what you say I will ignore you instead of arguing with you...is all that means.)
"What would you do if DIC ever went off line for good?"
I'd google a few of the nicknames I know from DIC and try to get another site started. Maybe.

I came here with a Javascript question, I think. Ultimately, I had done a Google search - and, yes, it brought up 8 million other items before DIC... and I went to every option prior to DIC on the list (I want to say DIC was several pages back on the list).... but none of the other options solved my problem.
I clicked the DIC link. I liked what I saw. I signed up. I got the help I needed. Someone pissed me off. I left for the better part of a year. Forgot all about DIC. One day, it popped up again on another Google search. So, I came back. And you all helped me again. And I stayed.
Anyway, if DIC ever went under, I think I would curl into a fetal position, suck my thumb and cry for at least a week. Then I'd put on my big girl pants and wonder aimlessly about the interwebz looking for a home.

I have no idea what I would do if Dream.In.Code went offline for good.
How could you even say something like that?

As tragic as it is, we must explore the option. Metors, earthquakes, Tidal waves, tsunamis, hurricanes are terrible... but what would happen if the big day came and DIC went offline.... Think of the tragedy... We must be prepared. I just happen to be the man not affraid to ask the question.

The hurricanes missed the servers that host DIC so I don't know if any natural disasters will strike it anytime soon.
