As always, I will post my 2 cents when I encounter random debates and "heated" topics.
First of all, you just gotta separate your spirituality from religions and related organizations, and extremists.

Okay, is there a God? I don't think so. The idea of the higher (shouldn't it be highest, if it were true?) being. Really, to me, it's just not close to making sense. The only possibility is that it's in a fourth dimension. But that just opens up a bigger wound.

What bout religions, holy books, holy texts, and holy stuffs? Well, all of the holy books were written by human beings (except for the Qoran which is supposed to have landed from heaven). And it's known that people aren't perfect, so how could they be 100% correct?

Religions... I could talk bout it for years. Well, for one, they were made in dark eras where there were only 2 types of people in the modern world:
1. The very rich, up-to-date rulers
2. The very poor, literally ignorant servants/slaves.
Them poor mofos were sometimes hard to control and put to work, so the rulers had to find a fail-proof method to do so without resorting to inventing new shit... and voila, the idea of an invisible powerful being that will destroy your soul came up.
After a while, organizations that would NOT exist without saying that "the Lord approves" it, started to form and become popular. For example, churches, charity organizations and all holy landmarks that do more than just serve as a place for people to worship stuff.
Religions are derivatives of each other. Read the holy books. And you'll get deja-vu's starting from the second book. Interesting?
Religions should also not tell you that you MUST be a worshipper of their God. No matter what! I thought every religion said that their God gave you the freedom of being free. Free means free, fuckers.
[Holy shit! Is there a character limit on posts? haha]

So, obviously, churches LIKE ANY DAMN financed organization should pay taxes. "Oh cmon they're doing it for God" Really? Well, I thought he said that one should be just and not steal from the rest.
Atheism? It's retarded. Because it's a religion in itself. And Atheists piss me off because they allege to know what happens after they die. No one knows except for the ones who DIED. Don't gimme that bullshit.

Last thing (yea I know): evolution. No one has come to a perfect explanation of that. No one. Not religions, not the big bang theory itself.

Advice: Don't let anyone tell you to be that or be this. Look things up, do your research, and decide for your own self.
Check out Zeitgeist and ancient Sumerian texts for starters. Google is your friend :P

"I'm smart and I approve this message...biatch!"

@RedSonja:
Some people believe in a higher power because it gives them a sense of self worth. They feel that no matter what happens to them, there will always be God who is there for them and loves them. I don't think there are many people who believe in God simply to keep from doing bad things.

But you have worth in my eyes. All humans have worth.

"God who is there for them and loves them"... Why child cancer? He's not there for them.

My departed father-in-law, a very staunch Catholic, child-beater and alcohol abuser, used to reckon only the fear of hellfire kept the whole of Christendom from breaking all ten commandments constantly. I think he was wrong too. But where did he get this idea from?

While all people might have worth in your eyes, only a very small percentage of the world population knows anything about you.

And my exact quote was "[Some people] feel that no matter what happens to them, there will always be God who is there for them and loves them."
You only posted the last bit of my sentence.

I think the nuns in my middle school also believed in using hellfire and damnation to keep people from being bad. However, my parents are not like that at all.

Shit happens. So because a child gets cancer, there's no God? You have several logical fallacies in your argument.

it's just as logically correct as "i survived cancer so god must be watching out for me"

by which i mean, not at all.

I still find it funny that Google is actually pretty close to a god as we can get and still prove it exists. The problem is the idea of a god itself varies from person to person, culture to culture.

Here's another question:
Does it matter?
Would any of you change how you live your lives if you could somehow empirically prove/disprove the existence of god?

<- Poly Theistic and chooses to believe something other then you. I have seen my gods and talked with them. The desert god never said so much as a howdy yeah I got your 6. If he did I would probably believe otherwise. But Religion and faith are highly personal. You are free to practice the religion of your choice and believe in the God/s of your choice.

I left too much out, it makes sense if you listen to the full half-hour version.

I got into trouble big time in primary school for observing that if the god they were on about was an omnipotent one of love and compassion etc, etc, then why so many bad things on the earth? The answer is the usual one which boils down to "you are too stupid to understand, the priest is too clever to explain it to you". Well, everyone gets into this one in school. Some accept this argument, I didn't.

oh, Richard Dawkins does this so much better... read the book if you want to hear more.

I think it's fine if you believe in whatever it takes to get you to lead a civilised life. It's not fine if your beliefs make you behave in an uncivilised manner.

And yes, everyone on earth is of equal worth, whether they ever heard of me or not. But I expect them to behave as though they thought so too, which is unreasonable of me, but I can't help it.

I don't know what Christian people you have been talking to, but that's the message. God loves everyone.

Also, bad things happen to good people. Bad things happen to bad people. Good things happen to bad people. If your belief system is based on whether or not you get nice things then there's nothing more I can say.
