PC in a constant reboot cycle... What gives?

Posted 09 August 2008 - 10:33 PM

For some reason, my PC keeps rebooting. My wife was surfing on it, and while on myspace, the thing just went into a constant reboot cycle. It won't load Windows, it won't boot into safe mode, and it won't go back to the last good configuration. I have no idea as to what this is or how to fix it. If anyone out there does, I would love some help in fixing this.

Is it rebooting before the OS comes up?

Does the the amount of time before the reboot change, or is not constant?

Does it give any indication that it's going to reboot?

Take the side of the case off, & see if any of the capacitors are popped out. This will indicate that they exceeded their limit & blew.

Is it rebooting before the OS comes up? It reboots right before the the OS is about to load.
Does the the amount of time before the reboot change, or is not constant? It is constant, everytime right before the Windows XP load screen.
Does it give any indication that it's going to reboot? Just the click of it rebooting.
Take the side of the case off, & see if any of the capacitors are popped out. This will indicate that they exceeded their limit & blew. About to do that now, just one question though, where are the capacitors?

If it's rebooting in the same place everytime, then chances are it's not the capacitors. But just to double check, then are the battery looking things, should be a line of about 5 to 10 of them by the CPU. They are either blue or brown. They should have a slight curve down, but if the curve comes out, then they've popped.

Again, if it's rebooting in the same spot, then I seriously doubt this is the issue.

I would boot with your XP disk (NOT the restore disk) & perform a repair.

OK, what if I can't find my disk? Is there another way to do this? Oh, and BTW, the capacitors look fine.

Legally you should own a copy of the OS, & I don't want this to get into a debate about piracy. Just make sure it's the same OS Home/Pro/Server, whatever it is. To my knowledge, they can't fix each others issues, but I'm not 100% acknowledged about that. Borrow one from work, check with friends. Since you're not installing the OS, the conscious should be ok with that.

Shouldn't be a problem, I'll check with some people I know tomorrow. I don't consider it piracy, I call it getting my computer working again! :P

I tried and it tells me I am unable to thank you so I will say it here: Thanks a mil!!!

Thanks, but you can thank me once it's working.

What happens when you try to go into safe mode? Does it stop at mud.sys?

It spits out all the lines of code and then reboots again before it can load the OS.

Over Heating?

My laptop does that because of the processor overheating.

No, not overheating, it's been cool for 2 yrs and my other comp right next to it has been for 5 yrs now. Found out it's a virus, which deleted part of my D drive so Windows won't boot. So now, I'm looking into getting another copy from a friend now and re-installing it. Who the hell thinks they're cool for putting a damn virus on Myspace?!?! Friggin trolls! Is there a way to track this person down? If so, I am definitely interested...

You could have a virus that put shutdown.exe in the start up files of your computer.

As a last resort format you PC and if it still happens its a hardware failure.

Yeah, I found out today that it's a virus. It was very widespread about two months ago. Hit a lot of people. It hit me and now my backup PC has no OS and won't boot up at all. How can I track these people that did this back? I am beyond pissed now!

You want to track someone that wrote a virus? Well, 1st off, if your infected PC no longer has an OS, then when you reinstall a new OS, chances are previously infected files will be removed. 2ndly, if you can't defend yourself against a virus, then I think looking into the details of such an aggressive piece of software might be out of your league. I for one would leave that up to agencies designed to do so. If it's a wide outbreak, then I'm sure there are people already working on it.

As well, chances are you'll only be able to track it back to as far as whom you caught it from, not clear back to the author.

In the back of my mind, I guess I knew that, but I was just hoping that there was a way that I hadn't thought of though. I just gotta get better at this. It just seriously burns up to the core, though!
