This is by far the strangest problem I have ever heard of.
I took a risk a few days ago and downloaded a program and installed it that i knew had a 99.9% chance of containg a virus. but i did it anyways.
so forgive my stupidness for a minute and explain this to me.
i'm now on a completely different system, my home computer (the lappy is the one i killed) trying to find the best free antivirus program.
i found one, downloaded it but have to register it, so i opened up gmail to go and grab the key from it, click the email and it shutsdown firefox. woah.
do it again. same thing. time and time again. eventually i did get it to open on my roommates pc.
today i wanted to do a google search for best free antivirus and as i searched in the ff google toolbar, no matter what i type in addition to it, anything containing the word antivirus shuts down firefox when i click go.
fucked. up.
why.
also, what is the best free antivirus nowadays.
holy smokes batman. my computer hates me.

I recommend Avast. Since about every computer that comes into my shop with a Virus on it has AVG, I would suggest you avoid that AntiVirus like the plague.
Just a question, if it's crashing firefox, who cares? Enter the code into the AntiVirus & get to work. Worry about Firefox crashing later. Or am I misunderstanding the situation?

the firefox is on a seperate system so its unrelated. just wonder why the fuck.
avast is what i've been running and so far i'm in a loop of it fixing them , rebooting and finding more. its in deep.
on this computer that crashes ff, it actually does ie too.
the word antivirus i guess... makes me wonder if i have something lurking on here i didn't know about.

That's one of the best things Avast hast to offer, in my opinion. Performing a pre-OS boot scan, where the Viruses can't hide, live, nor protect themselves.
Muhahaha. It's like napalm. I don't know wtf I'm talking about.

just use something like Bart PE to make a live windows disk that will allow you to check the HD for viruses, that works quite well

Remove the offending hard drive and insert it into a computer with an up to date virus scanner with up to date virus definitions.
Then scan the hard drive, remove any offending malware and reinstall into the original system.

Would you recommend the home version as much as the pro?

I have to agree with no2pencil Avast is the way to go due to low resource requirement and boot-time scan. If you can't install anything go get an Avira recovery CD ISO and boot it from a CD/USB. You'll run a Linux distro (I believe) and scan the drive clean without having to boot Windows.

What I would do.
( I assume you cant install anything. ie. msse or malwarebytes)
1. Download this: http://www.microsoft...us/default.aspx
It is Microsoft's antivirus that you can put on a flash drive and run.
2. boot in safe mode ie. less services. and run the program.
3. Re-download or reset your browser. I have seen viruses mess with these setting and cause redirection troubles in the browser even after they are gone.
EDIT: just realized how old this was, Hope he got it fixed
