OS won't load up.

Posted 08 September 2008 - 01:05 AM

My Desktop computer just won't load any OS. It is xp duel boot with xubuntu.
When I turn it on it shows the compaq screen with bios options then it goes to load up grub.
grub sometimes freezes (it never used to) but if it doesn't it comes up with the normal menu Xubuntu and Windows XP.
Xubuntu stops loading as soon as the loading screen comes up and after a while it displays all these messages and scrolls down really fast then freezes. When I try XP it just restarts when it should display the desktop after the loading screen. I've tried running Xubuntu in recovery mode but it didn't do anything to help solve this problem.

I've heared that it could be a driver problem, does anyone know what could be causing it and how to solve it?

Is This A Good Question/Topic? 0

Firstly. Check whether your RAM is ok. It sounds like things are being loaded into RAM and are then being corrupted.

There are many free RAM testing software out there, so go grab one and run a few itterations over your hardware.

Has your computer seen any sort of spike in power? I would check the bios, & see if there is any sort of a check for errors in the CMOS.

Also, double check the RAM & CPU, as previously suggested.

Lastly, you could throw a temporary/junk drive in there & if that works ok, then your primary drive may have errors in the MBR or in the controller card.

I posted a reply but it vanished :/
I'm pretty sure there was no changes to my machine recently (A week before it did this). It's not connected to the internet and I only put pictures and other stuff on it.
I did a RAM test and it didn't find any problems so it's probably not the RAM.

Find the manufacturer of your hard drive and download their diagnostic toolset.

Run this over the hard drive to see if it picks up any errors.
