Problems with displaying web pages

Posted 08 September 2008 - 08:03 PM

My laptop is clearly connected to the internet and I am able to use Yahoo Messenger but whenever I open Internet Explorer it won't even try to display a page it just gives that blank page saying "website could not be found"
so i then downloaded Mozilla Firefox and tried that but got the same result...when i go under Run cmd - configip - and type a web page in thru that it times out ??? Ne ideas I've also tried checking for viruses but the rest of the computer runs fine??

Is This A Good Question/Topic? 0

Open a command windows (start / run / cmd) & type ipconfig. See what address your default gateway is. Then see if you can ping this address. If that returns results, try to use nslookup to resolve domain names. If this fails, try power cycling the router & cable modem. If this is successful, try putting the ip address of the web site into your browser, rather than the URL. Chances are your chat programs are working because they communicate directly to the ip address of the server, & something along the line is unable to resolve domain names to ip addresses.

I dont have time for screenshots but here's the basic step by step:

1. Open your command prompt
Start Menu->Run .. -> "cmd"

2. type "ipconfig /all"

3. note the address of your Default Gateway, and DNS Server

3a. If you are using a router -> your gateway and dns server will most likely be 192.168.1.1, or some 192.168 address
3b. If you are connecting directly to your cable modem, these will be some different IP

These IP's are assigned by your ISP when you connect, and are what your computer uses to resolve a domain name to its address.

4. To verify whatever its set to is not responding, type "resolveip google.com"

Quote

C:\Documents and Settings\Guppy>nslookup google.com
Server: DD-WRT
Address: 192.168.1.1

Non-authoritative answer:
Name: google.com
Addresses: 64.233.167.99, 72.14.207.99, 64.233.187.99

If you get no response, your dns servers aren't working. If you do.. try clearing your browser cache and reloading a page.

If your dns is broken you can:
- power cycle your router. You can simply pull the power out, wait a few seconds, then plug it back in. If it is still broken, go back to the command prompt and type "ipconfig /release" then "ipconfig /renew" . This will force your computer to get a new connection, with hopefully the right dns server.
If you are plugged into your cable modem, power cycle that instead.

-Manually enter in new dns servers
You can tell your computer specific IP's to use instead of using what your ISP/router assigns. OpenDNS runs some very good public ones.
To change your dns:
a. Go to Network Connections
b. Right click on your connection and go to properties
c. Select "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)" and hit properties
d. Choose the radio button "Use the following dns server address"

Enter :
208.67.222.222
208.67.220.220

Click Ok. You may need to disable/enable the connection, I am not sure if it will automatically start taking the new options.
