web images should be

jpgs
gifs
or pngs

pngs are less common

jpgs are mostly used for images with a lot of different colors
gifs are used for images with a fewer number of colors

just make sure when you save your image (say in photoshop) you save it as highest quality. some programs dont let you pick the quality but most good programs should..

dont use bmps is something i must tell you... its just bad... ;)

when would you zoom in on an image? most webimages are going to do that to you... not anyway to get around that that i know of

well id use gif's if i need to do tranparency and jpeg for everything else....

photoshop asks you when saving jpegs what quality you want, i never go over 5 for web but i crank it up when its just for my computer

when making web graphics you have to think of the other users not just what runs fine on your computer....

<edit> o yeah no one on your site is gunna zoom in on your images...as long as they look good at the original size is all that matters </edit>

<edit again!> o yeah if you are using photoshop use the save for web feature its really quite handy</edit>

If you're worried about zooming in then consider using .svg as your format.

SVG is the shiznit. but you do need a plug-in.
