If you're only looking at touching on linux.. why not going a 'live' distro

Then nothing is installed, you don't have to work with the grub loader.. just put the cd in and reboot.. ?

... there is no "Best" Linux. Linux is the kernel & the distributions are simply software packages. The "Best" one will depend on what your needs are (as a computer user) & how in depth you want to get with Linux.

Yeah exactly, the whole point of linux is that there is no "best one", sure there are some that are more powerful, more stable, require less resources or are more intuitive - if you specify a specific need for your distro then there will be several that exist either as an install or liveCD.

The beauty of a live cd is that if you mess up your settings, you just reboot :D

Ubuntu is an old favourite for those new to Linux

Consider a dual boot with xp. I set it up on my laptop, so far so good.

Definitely go with Ubuntu - I use it exclusively now after using a dual boot.

Let me elaborate - I am not saying Ubuntu is the best, but for just breaking into the Linux Kernel you might want to start with Ubuntu || Fedora to get your feet wet. Then play around with other distro's.

This is pretty much like asking, "What's the best computer language?" And the answers you'll get will be pretty much the same too. There is no best, it depends on your needs, and X rocks.

I'd recommend Ubuntu to anyone, particularly someone just starting. The current livecd has a program on in that runs in windows and will allow you set up a dual boot system with little effort. It is one of the biggest and thus has large amount of online resources devoted to it.

I use an Ubuntu variant at home, Linux Mint. It's pruned down but comes with most of the stuff I use preloaded. At work I use Red Hat because the company pays for the license. Corporate support options make businesses feel all warm and fuzzy.

I would second the Linux Mint or Ubuntu recommendations. Both are excellent for someone just coming in to the Linux world, to get used to the operating system.

Ubuntu has a very friendly package manager...once you read some of the wikis and forums you will be a l33t c0d3r in no time once you have installed all the necessary packages

The most popular distros are Ubuntu, openSUSE, Fedora, Linux Mint and some others that I can't think of at the moment. So you can just get a LiveCD and you can try it without installing it and make your decision.

I tended to distro-hop a lot in my earlier linux days, but I fell in love with Ubuntu the first time I used it. I think that it's a good way to get your feet wet with linux, as the package manager is intuitive, and there is an extensive knowledge base in their forums.

...Ok that's ridiculous.

1stly, check Fedora's website & see what version is the latest... why does someone have to tell you what it is?
& yeah.. duh, of course it has a graphical user interface. What makes you think that any version of Linux does not?
