You should be able to cut the wire off and add a usb extension to that, my friend did it to an XBOX.
USB is the best way to go, now with USB 3.0 out

you never heard of it cause its not out. i work at a computer store. there is no such thing. also, the reason why you can do it with a XBOX controller is cause XBOX uses usb, just the made the fixture diffrent so you wouldnt think so. M$ did very little to construct XBOX that being one of them. all they did was take the sidewinder inject it with some stroids, and stuck a big X in the middle. and called it a controller.

Yes, its out.
Only a few devices work with it tho, like accessories.
Check out Alienware, mice, kyeboards, all USB 3.0

i went and looked at alienware the mice say 3.0, but it isnt usb 3.0, read it carefully Microsoft IntelliMouse Explorer 3.0 - USB - Standard Colo
that doesnt mean its usb 3.0 it means its Microsoft Intellimouse explorer 3.0, notice how the 3.0 comes before the usb ? that should have been the give away.

xfodder got that one. microsoft's 3.0 interface controllers are version 3.0 of the controller, not 3.0 of USB.
USB is still 2.0 my friends.
Mapping a device to USB isn't easy, USB is a digital controller in which each wire isnt a channel, but part of a signal. In order to map a device to a usb port, you need a usb controller on the end connected to the sega device, and schematics for that get reealy hairy. The only reason you can do that for an XBOX controller is that everything for the xbox has an usb controller in it already (the thing is a damn computer)
Serial runs on a channel per wire system. although you might need a controller to get all the buttons to run on it, it wont be as hairy to set up. I know that there are a few projects on sourceforge.net for making serial drivers (for lcd screens and other fun things) I would try searching google and such to see if anyone has done something similar before and has left schematics behind.
I don't know much about gameports but i bet they are similar to serial.
Here's a fairly descritive schematic of the genesis controller
http://www.hardwareb...controller.html
Here's a piece of software that will let you run a bunch of different kinds of controllers on your parallel port, might be worth a gander.
http://www.arcadecon...ork/default.htm
You could also try getting a pc game controller that had the same buttons as a genesis controller, and then ripping it apart and connecting the wires to the inside of the genesis. i bet that would be messy tho. could work.
I'm not sure how much help that was, but hey, i tried.

Oh and Genisis controllers follow standard wiring for Atari and Commodore Joysticks. I had to use a genesis controller for my atari ( vintage game freek )

Or you could just pick up a logitech wingman and plug it in
And yes, read more carefully before you state usb 3.0 is out. Not only is it probably still in the early stages of being worked on... it would be untimely considering the market hasn't had it's time to 'digest' 2.0 devices (plus encourage the consumer that purchasing a product now will not be obsolete ever 2 months when the new usb comes out...).
