CPU.

Posted 23 September 2008 - 10:00 AM

A friend of mine told me to download Everest, which is software that shows you your system specs. I've found what processor I need, the socket of my motherboard and what not. I found that it's AM2, i was curious as to if I could install any AM2 processor, aslong as it can be handled by my motherboard?

As long as the processor is an AM2 socket it will fit in your AM2 socket motherboard

This. It should work. Do you have a custom built system? or is it an OEM, from Dell or the likes? Either way, you should be able to find a list of compatible processors, but generally, as long as the FSB speed on the mobo is at or more than the processor you're putting in it, it should support it.

If the mother board can handle it, what other restrictions are there? The motherboard handles the bus & data transmission to the devices, as well as instruction calls from RAM (execution) to the CPU. There really isn't much else that governs what the CPU can & can not be. By much else I guess I mean that there isn't anything else. The CPU, Motherboard (chipset) & RAM must be compatible in order to run efficiently. Other than that, the hardware requirements are relatively straight forward.
