Linux Mandrake: Noob Here.

Posted 12 February 2003 - 05:57 PM

I am a *nix n00b, and I got Mandrake 9.1 Beta 3.
I installed it, started up and it loads!
Problem: I says something like this:
Username: I put in kenny, as it set it.
And then it says [email protected] in a prompt.
What do I do to load into Mandrake?!
Is This A Good Question/Topic? 0

When you installed, you didn't select for X windows to start (its the prog that starts KDE, Gnome, etc. GUI of choice). I've done it too, so here's how you fix it:

You could always reinstall, but this way gets you around it....

1. you'll need to be the root user (login: root :: password: whatever-you-set)
2. cd root
3. xfdrake (you won't have a mouse, but you can Tab around to what you need)

that should about do it...

I tried going to cd root, and it said permission denied, when I was on the admin user.

if you tried startx and it didn't work, you aren't going to get into a gui. Your xserver has to set up correctly to use Gnome, KDE, etc.

Try xf86config (as root) and edit your config file for your mouse, monitor, video card.

Then startx to verify you have the right settings.

After that, modify your runlevel to whatever you want (5 for GUI).

I will be using it for a server.
It will just connect to the internet via hub,
have apache, and a webmail server.

Also, mi6, it says permission denied when I try and goto
root, even using the user I made :(

Aswettla: I reinstalled 3 times.

In that case, kidd0, I'd say reinstall w/o any of the server stuff. Sounds like you need to learn a bit before you reach to being a Linux.Master().

Sounds like on (each) install, you aren't setting root up properly (if MD 9.1b has the same installer as 9, there is a root setup screen; used advanced install (only install the stuff you recognize, you can always install something else later) & make sure you setup the root acct. (and write it down; after 2 months, I can't even remember my root pwd.)).

Get a linux bible. buy one a version or so back (the shell cmds are the same (I recommend Bash)).

Finally & personally, unless your trying to program new mods (or are experienced w/linux) I wouldn't use a beta. Try backstepping to Mandrake 9.0.

<insert.plug="shameless"> D/l seti.at.home & join "Team 404Media". It's a good benchmark </insert>

Hey kidd0, I'm in the same boat; not the problems, but those are the reasons I'm using Mandrake, to learn all that "fun" non-windows stuff.

In that case kidd0, you dont need a GUI. That prompt will be your home base.. That IS the server! No GUI should be installed.

:P I could just install windows on the comp for a server, but I want to be able to play around with linux, as for the reason I am using a beta.

Dude, a server is all about a prompt..
If you want to get serious about a server, *usually* later on your server wont be beside you and/or taking up a whole monitor etc..

Thats why id say 95%+ of the people who own a server use a SSH (which is sorta like telnet) to control EVERYTHING from it..

Im just saying, you shouldnt get used to a GUI for a server if you plan on using a server in the future! I jumped right into using prompt without a gui and im happy I did

quik has the point.either way linux is about the prompt, not about the gui. why would u waste valuable resources on a server running the gui, everything can be done from the prompt. correction: it should be done from the prompt. if u want the gui, go back to windows. and another thing. why mandrake? and why a beta? with so many better choices that man rape there why choose it?
