well, as of today, i go to skool and try to test my luck, looks like ive been unbanned from the network (dont know about net, didnt feel like testing my luck that far), i dont know whether they saw the outrage of everyone here, or they just screwed up, but im not getting any zero's.

as for this site and their rules around it, im still going to take it to the adminstration (not the network adminstration, but the school adminstration) and say that they honestly need to make a firm stance of for or against, and take the appropriate actions. if they feel that their students should not visit this site, fine, its their choice. but they should make the responsible choice to ban the ip so its not possible to view the site, rather than waiting for people to do it and then spring on them.

i thank all of you for your support (and apparently this situation is the talk of most of the computer classes according to what one of the girls at school told me)

go slothy...they couldn't keep a token minority marsupial banned for long ;)

Sent to the head of Information Technology at Rio Rancho Public Schools:

Per our short telephone conversation earlier today, I am emailing you
regarding the suspension of a students account and the banning of a
website which I created 2 years ago to assist students in the Web Design,
C++, and VBScripting classes.

I am a graduate of Rio Rancho High School, 2001. Shortly before I
gradutated I started a small online community (http://www.dreamincode.net)
to help the students in the technology classes at RRHS and generally
promote the Web Industry. Since it's start, dream.in.code has grown to
over 2,300 members and has over 73,000 posts, more than 50% of which are
in forums such as C++, PHP, Hardware/Software Troubleshooting, VBScript,
Web Design Techniques, HTML, and Flash. Many of our most active members
are Rio Rancho High School students and during the time they have been
members at dream.in.code, I have personally had the pleasure of seeing
these young scholars grow from 'newbies' in the world of programming to
true professionals.

It was brought to my attention this week that one of the students at Rio
Rancho High School had his account suspended for surfing my website which
was called a "Rogue Hacking Community" which "Promoted Hacking Activities"
I employ aprox. 7 people that monitor my site 24 hours a day and watch for
innapropriate content regarding hacking, software piracy, and offensive
material. I can assure you my site does not promote any illegal activity.
This brings me to the point of this email which is to inquire why a
student visiting my website on a school computer who was looking to help
other students by answering several posts in the forums had his account
suspended.

The 2,300 members of dream.in.code feel so strongly about the issue of
censoring a community which was developed as a resource for students and
has brought so much to the web community they have started a petition and
have emailed TechTV and local news agencies.

The only thing I am personally interested in is the justification of why a
student had his account suspended and why my website was banned from Rio
Rancho High School when it has been found to be such a valuable resource
to the students and even faculty.

Please feel free to call me, my phone number is: 319-0354

Best Regards,

Chris Kenworthy

It's amazing, we worked so hard to create a community in the c++ section for kids that specifically go to RRHS to come to for HELP. Now they ban the site. This is rediculous, and if i was there i would be pulling some strings with the higher ups I know there.

Dream.in.code's main goal is to provide help to web designers and programmers. Yes we do talk about hacking. But not Cracking the only time we have talked about hacking is when we are talking about hacking away at some huge program that was due the next day. Or a huge server was hacked into the other day and destroyed and how sorry we felt for the sites admin.

I knew RRHS was strict but come on they are banning educational sites. They had to of gotten a new admin since i left. cause there is no way that the guy i knew would want to block this site. If it is the same guy, i am greatly disappointed in him.

Then you have the over-the-hill, too old to learn, just plain grouchy crowd, like me. Who happen to find this resource and have a genuine admiration for people who help each other, like here. I came here about a year ago looking for some Flash help and have popped in from time to time. I have even tried to help a couple of people when I actually know what they are talking about...not often. Sure, I've been flamed a couple of times, but I think I probably deserved it. I consider it a sign of acceptance. And on the subject of hacking and cracking, I don't think most school admins know the difference. In fact I doubt most people know the difference in general.

As far as advice on college. Perhaps the biggest difference between high school and college is that your professors in college (for the most part) can be your best friend and most valuable resource, use them. Most are happy to spend a half hour after class, one on one to discuss a point and offer guidance. Most of my high school teachers were watching the clock as much as I was. But in college it is up to you. You pay for it, you have to make the most of it.
