IE7 Freezes Up

Posted 23 October 2008 - 07:55 PM

So for a while now on my desktop which is running XP SP3, blah, blah, blah good ole IE7 fires up and freezes it has been doing this for quite some time now, probably 6 months or so I never paid it any mind because I primarily use Firefox. However, I do use IE for testing purposes.

My first instinct was to try a fresh re-install of IE7. Nothing, same issue. So I tried a repair of IE7, same thing. So then I remembered while at work a co-worker had an issue where IE7 would not even connect to the internet. Firefox would however. The solution was a program called winsockxpfix. So I went and downloaded that and gave it a go with the assumption maybe some of the registry files are moved or corrupted.

Now after several hours of trolling various forums the best advice I found from some bright minds were - "use firefox"
that is quality help right there, completely remedies the problem. (NOT)

Has anyone had issues with this before, anyone know a solution besides not using it. The moral of the post is I know there are better alternatives out there, the issue is I want a working version of IE7.

Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the insight.

I will have to install Hijack this, adaware and run it along with AVG see what it finds.

You shouldn't have to necessarily reformat, but if it comes down to it...

My laptop has Linux, the other day I visited a site and a popup said my version of windows was infected and to install antivirus 2008 I laughed so hard.

But.... Ironically what happened was it tried to install itself after I clicked the X and said GTFO.

And it tried to install, all it did was mess up my Compiz settings which I had to reset. And took away my windows title bar. X [] _

It was very entertaining to say the least. I guess I should rush out and get antivirus 2008 before linux becomes further infected.

I'm torn. So many people are tricked by that Antivirus 2008/2009/XP/Vista, however it's bringing me a ton of business!

I feel sorry for the people, & they shouldn't have to put up with this BS, because it looks legit.

I had the same problem, Explorer would just freeze and then shut itself down. I downloaded beta 8 and am not having any problems at all (my laptop running XP).

you gotta love people that are to scared to try fix things when it goes bellyup. While the antivirus virus is an annoyance, anyone with google can fix it

Well in its defense it can be a bitch to get a grip on. It blocks you from CAD, C:/ Drive, and any other means of getting to it except for the cmd prompt. Running Hijack This and a few other programs like Ad Aware and AVG was able to help me get rid of the issue in a matter of hours. Most of that was trying to do a conference call on the port the doucher presenting to us that was getting hammered. lol.

It did however cause issue with my firefox / Compiz via Ubuntu - I created another post on this issue because I got redirected to a yellow pages site and more problems arose.

I've actually seen one (just one) where it ran a filter for hijackthis.exe

I had to rename the exe to hijack.exe ... sneaky bitch.
