Going Back In Time

Posted 30 March 2003 - 01:01 PM

ok. i have a rather large dilemma.

it started out when i installed a new desktop theme that totally screwed up all my .jpeg files. they turned into mozilla icons. once i fixed that and set them back to open in paint shop pro, i lost the thumbnail preview option (when you click on the icon) and now, whenever i resize (large resolution to smaller resolution) a jpeg in any program, it gets all blurry and pixelated. here's what i mean: Posted Image (link)

now someone from deskmod.com sent me a .reg file because they said it would fix it (it didn't). after i "merged" the .reg file, is when my jpeg's started getting all pixelated when resizing.

so in conclusion, my question is: A.) should i go into my regisitry and delete the files the person sent me or B.) should i use F8 on startup to go into safe mode and set my computer back to march 18 (that's when everything was ok)?

someone please help, i'm desperate.

p.s. - i'm using windows 98.

a few questions about setting it back...

-you said it will cause less problems. so what problems could happen?

-will i lose all my files and programs installed since then?

-how exactly do i do it again, once in safe mode?

well messing with the registry could get messy and could cause more problems. i think you will lose some stuff. depending on what it is. i think with XP (i know you are on 98) it only rolls back the drivers, but 98 dont have that feature.

yeah, i was told that the registry had nothing to do with it anyways. what type of stuff could i lose? is there any way i could save it? lastly, what's the step-by-step process to do it? all i know is you tap F8 on startup.

but wait a second...if the registry had nothing to do with it, then what's the point of going back in time?

but i've tried all the settings and i cannot fix this problem.

if the issue ocured after you merged the registry entry then the registry will have everything to do with it. what will you lose? prolly every app you installed since whenever you revert to will no longer work... or might with errors. i hope you haven't installed a whole lot since whenever... data will be uneffected... infact the programs you installed will still look they are present. i'd uninstall anything before you do this.
how do you do it?
after tapping F8 on boot you should arrive at a boot menu. choose command prompt only. at the C: (or C:\WINDOWS prompt type in 'scanreg /restore' without the ('s). hit enter. scanreg only holds the last 5 registries from the last 5 successful starts.... so, if you've rebooted more than 5 times since you may be SOL. so anyway, you piick a date you want to revert to and hit enter... you computer reboots with the old registry loaded. done deal. you could also prolly choose to restart in MSDOS mode from the shutdown menu and get this done as well. i'd personally just open that .reg file in notepad and see what it altered and just open regedit and change it manually. you'd have to have access to a clean registry key to see what the values were originally tho. good luck!

You could also set the registry back to a "clean" XP install. This also means reinstalling all pregrams, but not loosing the data. This is a last resort measure in my opinion.

i don't have XP. i tried the F8 method, i chose march 21 (because that was the latest i could chose) and it said the "scanreg failed"...so i don't know why it said that.

should i show you what the .reg file says so you can tell me what to edit?

and? i think you're the one who needs to know about registry editing, but thanks for the link... at least this article pertained to Win9x... go ahead and post the reg file's contents and hopefully someone here with Win9x can tell you what the entry should read... if at all.

those entries look just like file type associations... meaning that they tell windows what app opens that file type.

if the pixelation only happened after you added the .reg file you will need to find someone with Win98 and compare those registry entries. you would change yours to match theirs.
there is also another ify thing you can do... your system makes a copy of the original registry when windows first installs. if saves it as a file named: system.1st
if you can somehow open that file... perhaps in regedit... you may be able to browse that registry and get the info you need. you by no means want to replace or copy that whole registry into yours. just the pieces you need. you may also need to change system.1st to system.dat to open it. do not overwrite your existing system.dat file to do this as that would be erasing your current registry. copy system.1st to another location if you have to.
