Fixing the MBR via Recovery Console

Posted 09 November 2008 - 09:12 PM

I know there are no stupid questions except for the ones you don't ask, but this may be borderline...

I have Vista Ultimate 64 installed and I jacked up my MBR with Ubuntu. Not really jacked up, I knew I was doing it, and it wasn't really me, Wubi did it against my knowledge or will. Anyway. Long story still long, I couldn't uninstall Ubuntu through their uninstall app and I couldn't install (re-install?) Wubi to uninstall Ubuntu, so I just deleted the folder/"partition", assuming that since it installed to its own folder to assumedly use its own file system, that would be the only change I needed to make. Go figure, they changed the MBR or dropped some other MBR file somewhere on the comp that I don't know about (can that happen?), a fact I discovered when I rebooted and was greeted with the Windows Boot Manager and informed that I could (try) to boot into Ubuntu if I wanted (weird).

That might be WAY more information than anybody needs to know, but I figured this might be a unique situation that might require some extra explanation of the situation to ensure that I square this away completely.

Any help?!

Thanks in advance :D

So, is your mbr really broken, or does it just give you the option to boot into ubuntu?

I would imagine you could fix the mbr with the cd you have.

When you installed Ubuntu, it automatically installs GRUB as your MBR. Does your windows Boot loader load anyting?
If you are just woundering about why it asks you if you want to boot in ubuntu, it's because it's info is stored in your BCD ([B]oot [C]onfigoration [D]ata I hate BCD <_< ). It will continue to ask untill it is removed from your BCD. You can try and do it manually through command line using bcdedit.

If you want to make GRUB your MBR, then you could just download it and install it by running "grub" in the console.

Wubi installs ubuntu into the windows partition. Ubuntu is added as as entry into the Windows bootloader.
all you should really have to do is boot into recovery mode on a cd and type "fixmbr" If you don't use any arguments it will automatically fix the primary HD.

If you cannot repair it with the CD, you can get a free program that can locate the backup MBR for windows and also repair the MFT. Then windows should boot normally. You can start at NTFS.com and then they have links to several sites to get repair tools and tutorials.

EDIT: My bad didn't read the post correctly

I thought you wanted to restore the windows XP boot loader....
Which would be FIXBOOT and FIX MBR

EDIT2: There is a free application called EasyBCD however that should allow you to remove the Ubuntu entry. Do a quick google search for it ... its really easy to use.

the vista cd from the command console (not recovery) has the same options, just slightly different commands:

Quote

Bootrec.exe /fixMBR
Bootrec.exe /fixBoot

From my Vista/XP dual boot tutorial: http://www.dreaminco...wtopic26756.htm

If grub is installed there should be no problem as it can detect vista quite nicely.
