So I'm writing this up from a school computer, in my free period (1st
I store all of my apps I use at school on my 4GB USB drive. Things like FirefoxPortable, Notepad++, WinSCP, PuTTY, OpenOfficePortable (in case I type something up at home and forget to save it as a .doc), etc. Until recently, all I would have to do is use these is create a shortcut on the desktop for a computer, and I'd be set on that computer - it'd save my settings and I'd just have to put my drive in and click the shortcut. Very useful because I tend to use the same computers over and over again.
I'm assuming while my school's IT guy(s? I've only seen one ever, a middle age confused looking bald guy) was in for Patch Tuesday yesterday, he blocked the ability to run an executable from a peripheral drive. When I clicked on the shortcuts, it told me there was a software restriction on the computer.
First, how stupid of a restriction is that? They already blocked off access to the important things like the registry or other students' data, so why not let us run a program from a USB drive?
Second, I immediately suspected that it may just be for peripheral drives. Heck, it might even just be a restriction on the E: drive (does anybody know how to change the drive letter of a USB drive? I'd love to try that - my school has classic oversights, such as blocking http://www.facebook.com, but not https://www.facebook.com). So I copied all the app data to my desktop, and now it works fine. Just one added step, and for computers I don't use regularly I'll clear it off the desktop when I'm done so they don't get mad about me taking up hard drive space.
I'm curious as to what they'll try next. Blocking off running applications from the C: drive?
</rant>
Does anybody else have stories of annoying, under qualified, and just retarded IT guys? I'd love to here them
