Freelancing Poll!

Posted 02 December 2008 - 11:41 PM

Hey everyone,

I'm interested in writing some blog posts and maybe some tutorials for the freelancing forum, but I wanted to figure out where everyone was as far as experience and interest. If you can, fill out the poll and leave some questions or comments about things you'd like to see in this forum.

BTW, I wrote that poll at 2am. I totally missed spelling belt right. Ha ha. I promise I'm not an idiot, I was just tired.

Well, I don't know, if it's the right thing to say, but I don't trust freelancing websites anymore - there tend to be many buyers, who don't pay in full at the end - this is what my experience had been so far. Honestly, I don't know the alternative to freelancing sites, so if anyone here is willing to share the info - it'd be much welcomed! Thank you!

Ha, I found my little niche but I'm gonna be an ass and hog it. However, I can hint that word of mouth is a great way to get clients. Also, try a few freelancing job boards that you have to pay for. There tends to be higher quality clients with less competition. You can start at:

Freelance Switch Jobs

Ha, thanks. Funny thing was I was misspelling things like that all night. I really dropped the ball for someone who considers grammar to be important. Ha ha. Thanks.

So far I have done 3 or 4 projects of various things for people but I haven't been paid for any of it so I would like to know how to actually make some money at it...

Ask for money and stop doing things for free? If you treat it like a business and not as a favor for someone the money will definitely come. Just make sure that you would buy what you offer.

It's called contracts. You get them to sign a contract.

What I do is provide a proof of concept. Like, say they want a web site. I'll get an agreed amount up front, & then provide (via a laptop or on our servers) a working idea of their design. Then they are to pay the rest up front. No payment, no website.

That's one of the nice things about Rent A Coder. It's all moderated. So make sure you keep all of your conversation ON Rent A Coder. Some buyers will ask you to do extra stuff on the side, & then you can't do shit about it, cuz it wasn't documented. Keep the conversation documented on Rent A Coder, & only do what the job bid is for, & they have to pay you. Before you can start working Rent A Coder will escrow the money, which means THEY take it from the buyer. It's either given back or given to you, if there is a disagreement. So far I have yet to get screwed over on Rent A Coder, as long as I play safe. I learned the hard way & I won't go down that road again :)
