Power Supplies [Maybe Resolved]

Posted 12 December 2008 - 07:58 AM

I'm pretty certain that this is power supply failure, but I'll describe what happened anyway.

So, I was just using my computer, and then it shuts off without warning. However, the green power light is still on. I look at the back of the power supply, and there's a red light on the power supply. I opened up my computer, and disconnected all of the power cables, and the red light was still on. I'm going to assume that the red light should not be red.

I got this power supply for cheap off the internet from geeks.com, so I'm not 100% positive it was a great power supply to begin with.

So, now I have some questions for you guys, assuming that the PS is bad.
I have a high end graphics card that says it requires >= 450W, and 26A on the DC rail.
That card is definitely the biggest power sucker in my system, so by the time those reqs are met, I think the rest of my system will have enough power.

Most power supplies I've looked at offer multiple DC rails, but each rail has less than 26A; about 15 is a pretty standard number. Is that OK if I give the graphics card a dedicated DC rail, and the split the remaining rail(s) between the rest of the system?

I've not seen a power supply with an LED on it. Can you provide a link to it on geeks.com?

If the computer does still power up, but sporadically powers off, check your Caps on the motherboard. See if any of them are popped. They filter out noise, but if they are blown, then 5.5 & 3.3 doesn't look the same when they pick up noise from the power supply & boom, the pc shuts off.

I looked at the mobo caps, but none of them look blown.
Also, looking at the list of issues I gave earlier, I realize that I left probably the most telling one off.
If I have the computer plugged in but not turned on for too long, the computer won't start. I have to unplug the cord and wait for a few minutes, plug the cable back in, and then immediately start the computer. Then, it will work.

I have something very similar to this and I have been quite pleased for the last year. I have a 88000 GTX and it sucks a lot of juice.

Yeah, I have a 9800 GT, which is why I need a more capable power supply

Anyway, I called up the distributor, and it was still under warranty, so they're shipping a new one. I'm hoping that fixes everything.
