Ipod Linux Trouble

Posted 13 December 2008 - 07:53 PM

I'm trying to install iPodLinux
I switch between Linux(Ubuntu) and Windows xp during this.
this is the site i used http://www.ipodlinux...al_Installation

Alright heres the problem, after my original attempt on installing iPodLinux I tried to restore it. Itunes wasn't working so i formated it in the windows formater. But turns out that was a VERY bad idea. Ipodpatcher (a program used for the install) would not recognize my ipod so i tried to restore my ipod from the manual instructions on the bottom of the install page. It was *almost* all good until the firmware part. I got the firmware on the ipod, my ipod started booting and i saw a loading bar below the apple. Thats when i reset it and now it will not turn back on. Atm i have it plugged into the wall directly and am going to try to reset after a while again but so far nothing has worked.. :( any ideas?

On the site, it says

Quote

Also, do not reboot your iPod while it's booting for the first time after a firmware update (using the Apple updater). This will abort the ROM flashing, and WILL RENDER YOUR iPod USELESS.
under reboot ipod here

I didnt find that info inside the quote until after I had reset :( so I'm not *that* dumb

Is This A Good Question/Topic? 0

Start here:
http://support.apple...iewlocale=en_US
http://support.apple...iewlocale=en_US

Restore your iPod to the factory default.

If none of this works, you may well need this then:
http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/
To look for a way to contact Apple Support.
Start here, it looks like:

Regarding the plug that you plug it into the wall. Is it a firmware attachment or USB? I had a similar issue where I sold an iPod on eBay & the kid did a firmware restore as soon as he got it. The only plug that he had(has?) is the USB/wall jack. It is my understanding that to complete a restore flash you MUST have the Fireware/wall jack, or Firewire to Apple/PC. He ended up sending me back the unit & I finished the restore. On a side note I resold it for more than he paid, so it was worth my extra effort.

Well i checked everything on the first post. Nothing worked thanks though. as for the second, how did you fix it.. I have both usb and firewire port cables for my ipod. But atm the ipod seems completely "Bricked".
If there is a way to rewrite the ROM on the Logic Board for the iPod I believe it would work. But how do I do this if nothing is recognizing it. The only recognition I'm getting is a high pitched noise that some ipods make when you put your ear next to the scroll wheel. Some people cant hear it though and It's pretty quiet to begin with. Oh and that only happens while it is plugged in.

When you flash the ROM, it marks for writing & when it's finished it is write protected. That's why they insist that you don't turn it off. Unfortunately you can't rewrite to it, because it no long has a language to understand. It would be similar to me telling you :

"Only ever listen to my next instruction, it will instruct you how to understand language, so for now forget everything you know"

& then you never get the next instruction, so you never understand language again.

& also unfortunately when it's bricked, that's it, it's done. You can't open it back up for writing since it is the boot device.

I say continue to follow the instructions provided by MorphiusFaydal.

Maybe you can try to put it into disk mode. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1363

Call apple and ask about it. I bet they're the best people to tell you how to fix this.

Depends. Which version iPod are we talking about?

Actually no. Apple doesn't waist their time with iPod repair. If it's broke, their suggestion is a great deal on a new one, pitch the old one.

I would agree with GWatt... Even though I know that they're probably going to tell him he has to buy a new iPod, if his bricked one is still within warranty, then he has a chance to get his current one fixed or replaced for cheap or even free.

As for needing FireWire - No. The current crop of iPods won't even work over FireWire.. You have to use USB. And I've done a full restore off of a Windows PC over USB. ;)

True. I assumed this one wasn't under warranty.

GWatt suggested calling Apple so they could help him trouble shoot it or even fix it. This is what I disagreed with. At least the Cleveland store. They simply sell you new items to replace the defective ones. I called them to see if I could buy parts & they actually laughed. They said they had no repair technicians & simply suggest replacing the unit.

Besides, if he's flashing it, or taking it apart to replace the logic board, chances are even if it is under warranty, they are no longer going to honor it.

But it doesn't hurt to at least try to call them.

Its an ipod video 5th gen. No warranty and i actually won it in a contest 4 or so years ago. Been using it since then. I'll try calling apple, but I have the logic board on its way, so if I do happen to get it working, then i'll have a nice shiny new logic board just in case this one dies again. I'll post with what i get from apple.
