CodeLibrary

Posted 13 December 2008 - 09:08 PM

Recently, I found out that I need to store some pieces of code I can reuse. Storing the reusable code in a text file and arranging it that way wasn't very convenient, plus searching for the needed piece of code will take a long time, so I decided to write a code management application. It is still in development, so many features are still to be added.

CodeLibrary 1.0 (Alpha)

CodeLibrary is a code management tool. You can store all your code in one place and easily manage it. The whole code base is stored in an XML file for better flexibility. For easier code management, you can add many descriptive tags to the code unit you are storing, as author, type, programming language as well as additional information.

The application is written in C# using Visual Studio 2008, so you will need .NET Framework 3.5 to run this application.

The application files are attached to this message: CodeLibrary_1.0A.zip. Just extract the files and use the CodeLibrary.exe to launch CodeLibrary.

I would really appreciate any comments, ideas and critics.

Thanks! Now working on adding support for categories. I am also planning to implement syntax highlighting.

It would be great!

Oh, I had some problems with disappearing indentation, but it may be only my mistake...

Pretty cool. Syntax highlighting is a very good idea! Will you release the sourcecode?

I tried to add some indented code, but the indentation style remains after I restart the application. Thanks for reporting though. I will try to see what I can do.

Nice idea.

Thanks!

I am really not sure if I will release the source code. At least I wasn't planning this.

I just created a UserVoice page for CodeLibrary:

http://codelibrary.uservoice.com/

You can visit that page to offer suggestions on how to improve the product, as well as vote on others' ideas.

CodeLibrary Alpha 2 available!

Added features:
  • Categories - now you can easily categorize your code units by creating separate categories for different groups of code units (for example, written in different programming languages).
  • Save - you can now save the library file without exiting the application. Just access the File > Save menu option.
  • Categories/Units Counter - now you can see how many categories and code units you have in your library by just looking at the status bar at the bottom of the main window.

Fixed:
  • Duplicate Protection - now you can't create duplicate items in the same category or duplicate categories.
  • Blank Fields - when adding new code units, you can't leave any fields blank.
  • Minor Fixes

You can get the non-install compressed package by downloading the attachment from this message: CodeLibrary_1.0A2.

Very nice application! :) Unfortuanatley I have to use Alpha 1 because Alpha 2 crashes on me :( However! I can see this going places ! :^: Also even when I use Alpha 1 it never has my code there when I start back up again.

In future versions I would like to see:
1. Syntax Hilighting
2. Ability to impot source files (i.e .cpp files)
3. Ability to import CodeLibrary library files (For upgrading reasons)

Thank you for your input! Your ideas will be implemented in the first beta version of the application.

What is the error message when Alpha 2 crashes? Alpha 2 has some significant improvements, so I at this moment I would recommend using Alpha. Please, post a detailed error report to find ways to solve your problem.

To save your code, make sure you click on Yes when the application is being closed to save the changes.

NOTE: Additional features will also be implemented, including some security options (file encryption and password protection).

Oh, never mind, it doesn't crash anymore!

However I noticed a bug in the help topics:

When you click on the Managing code units button nothing happens however when you click on the Registering codelibrary button it takes you to the Managing code units topic.

Also what is "Register Application"?

Thanks! The bug will be fixed in the first beta.

Also what is "Register Application"?

When the application will be done (as a RTM release), users will have the opportunity to register the application to get some additional benefits, like e-mail notifications regarding the application, as well as update announcements. This feature will be available only in the final release.
