Laptop Backpack

Posted 19 December 2008 - 03:01 PM

I am looking for a good laptop backpack for next semester. something made to securely hold a 12-15inch laptop, with a decent amount of pockets for my skool work and stuff (like my DS!).

i would also like something with ties or something along those lines so the backpack expands and contracts to it's contents. i hate a big puffy bag with nothing in it.

so ladies and gentlemen, got any ideas?

if not, got any bags that you use that you recommend or would like to hate on?

Is This A Good Question/Topic? 0

I got a Targus 17" laptop backpack a couple of years ago and have beat the crap out of it and it's still hanging on. I carry a laptop and accessories, several school books (fat ones), an umbrella, calculator, pens/pencils, stapler, and all of my personal effects in various pockets and compartments. I also clip a 2.2 litre bottle of water onto it. When it's fully loaded with crap it probably weights in excess of 50 lbs, but the shoulder straps are super-reinforced, so I can sling it around with no worries. The only complaint is that the zipper for the mobile phone pocket has come "undone", but that's probably something my wife can mend.

I don't have experience with a 15" bag, but I'd recommend the Targus brand just based on my experience.

ditto on the Targus, mine has had upwards of 3 machines in it for weeks (long story), caustic reagents (even longer story), and I have gone on several 3<-->5 day vacations packing only the backpack. Front most pocket unusable due to a vial of cyanoacrylate that broke open and polymerized in there, but otherwise, no loss of function, looks as good as the day I got it (circa 4 years ago).

I wouldn't trust a backpack - my advise - go with a laptop suitcase.

I've almost always used the briefcase option my self, but have been thinking about moving to the backpack, so I'm interested in recommendations as well.

And I'll agree with programmist...that site makes baby Jesus cry. Not that I could do any better. ;)

I really like all the Eastpak bags, have an ebay for them. Most come with a laptop slot.

I've heard that the timbuk2 messenger bags are just about the best money can buy, and they are expensive (starting at around $100-$130). But high quality nonetheless. I know a few students that have 'em.

The first one looks like it'd be a better choice for avoiding a big, puffy, empty bag.

that probably wouldn't be a concern with either, the second one has the straps to pull to a custom size.
