im running linux red hat 9, and im trying to install the Nvidia display drivers for my GF4 MX 420.
now in the readme it tells me to cd into the nvidia_kernel directory. i do that and then type make install
according to the readme, that should word, but i keep getting this:
You appear to be compiling the NVIDIA kernel module with
a compiler different from the one that was used to compile
the running kernel. This may be perfectly fine, but there
are cases where this can lead to unexpected behaviour and
system crashes.
If you know what you are doing and want to override this
check, you can do so by setting IGNORE_CC_MISMATCH.
In any other case, set the CC environment variable to the
name of the compiler that was used to compile the kernel.
*** Failed cc sanity check. Bailing out! ***
make: *** [gcc-check] Error 1
not exactly sure how to set ignor_cc_mismatch =(
any help here would be hot .

I had this same problem w/Mandrake 9. The only solutions I found are: re-compile the kernel w/ the right drivers (if you're just starting this is *more* that daunting) or (in my case) d/l a newer version (Mandrake 9.1 includes NVIDIA drivers (esp. important b/c I'm one of those beginners).
Anyway, I'd reccommend upgrading (if possible, I'm a Mandrake whore so I know nothing of RedHat). Beyond that (should no upgrade be available & you don't wanna switch Lins) then buckle down & recompile (I'm lazy so I'm just gonna upgrade (esp. since Aki has been flaky this last week or so)).

Object is right, the way you install drivers into linux is complie them into the kernel (horray for monolitic design!) , look online for a tutorial, and run, i did it for onboard audio drivers, and it was no big deal
