Windows XP Black Edition?

Posted 23 December 2008 - 12:41 PM

I saw this on the net, it's almost on every Warez related site. What's with this modified version of Windows? Is it safe? Good? Anyone tried it yet?

It's an illegal version of Windows XP loaded up with old warez and customized to look like Vista.

It's also kinda* unstable. Moreso than Windows normally is. (Which, in all fairness, isn't the unstable anymore. Not as good as OS X or Linux, but 2000/XP/2003/Vista/2008 are way better than 95/98/ME could have ever hoped to be.)

* and by "kinda", I mean very. The "additions" they make to it have a bad habit of breaking stuff. So you end up reinstalling ever month or so, rather than the 6 months or more that most geeks recommend for base XP.

If you are downloading it from Warez, then I would suggest a large red No! Not safe.

Thanks people.

I wanted to install it on my brother's computer. He's not much into computers, so he needs format every single month and it's such a pain to install every single programs he needs over and over again. I've read that it comes with all 'basic' programs pre-installed, such as Nero, Office.. I might give it a try someday.

When I said "safe", I thought on privacy matter and virus-free. :)

Cheers!

You should get everything set up properly, and then make an image of his hard drive. When you need to you can just restore the image. It's faster than reinstalling everything by hand, and once the process is started you pretty much just need to leave it alone for a few hours (depends on the HD size and speed). Tools like Acronis True Image can do this.

Or you could just educate him so that he won't screw up his computer every single month.

It's safe, I've made Windows's similar to Black Edition but judging by the amount of downloads that has, it's safe. I would reccemend making your own using nLite and trust me, its a lot better than using a pre-made one and just read the faq and stuff if you have questions on their website

It's not the fact that they've added software to the base install; it's all the cracks/hack/etc that they've applied to it. Pirated software on vanilla Windows is asked for trouble, applying it to a stripped down install, and then added loads of registry hacks? Recipe for disaster.

There is that. Frequenting questionable websites on IE can lead to horrible and bad things happening to your computer.

Pirated Internet Explorer!

Or would you need to format twice per month?

My question is if he is proficient enough for pirating software he should be smart enough to do his own reinstall of windows and all his programs.... OR just have him stop pirating software.... Just my 2 cents..... I have my own fair share of non registered software and have never had any problems. So if he is messing up his computer so often from wherever he goes and can't determine what to use and what not to use, he isn't doing a very good job and should quit.

I've used two different versions and both seemed just as stable as any other xp os. The only difference really is the themes and all of the "free" software.
