Something Strange Is Going On Here...

Posted 30 December 2008 - 06:12 AM

Okay well this problem began yesterday. I got an error message from "Windows Security Alerts" telling me that my Virus Protection software is turned off. (I'm using Windows Vista with AVG Internet Security 8) So I pressed the button turning it back on thinking nothing of it.

Then again this morning I got the same error, this time when I attempted to turn it back on nothing happens. The actual software itself is working fine, I can open it up scan edit the firewall settings and all that. And now I've been having errors with the AVG tool bar complaining about some components aren't active or something along those lines.

Also I've been having strange internet errors with it connecting then stopping, connecting then stopping, over and over. Do I have a virus? or is AVG just dying on me xD

This isn't effecting anything else, it's just worrying. Help or advice would be appreciated :)

Have you tried to uninstall AVG and reinstall it? You might be on the right track that it is a virus. I have AVG with Vista, and have not had any issues with it acting up like that. If anything, it performs quite well. Get another av program, and run it on the machine as it is, and see if it catches any virus'.

I was having issues with AVG properly updating on Vista. I switched to Avast and haven't had a problem yet.

At my shop almost every computer that comes in infested with Viruses is running AVG. I swear that program is worthless.

I always replace it with Avast.

Maybe I should send AVG a Christmas card for putting food on my table, for being an absolutely worthless program?

I have to agree with No2 on that statement. AVG is worthless anymore. I even begun taken Bitdefender off of most of our work machines and replaceing with Avast because Bit Defender hasn't been doing it's job efficiently either and bogging down our computers.

You know what....after looking at my cpu, I found out that it was Avast that I have, and have not had an issue with it. It was AVG that I removed. Sorry for the mis-information!

My personal opinion is that as long as you are stuck using Window$ boxes and IE, you pretty much need some sort of antivirus, which at some indeterminate point will be defeated by bad guys/girls in black hats. I've had both AVG and Avast work, and fail miserably. The packages available @retail (Norton, McAfee)are worthless, imho. the only reasonable defence is to resort to what every sound-minded Bond villian would do: SPIKE THEM!

At home I use Linux on my laptop, M$ on my desktop and unfortunately the only AV worth using imho is Avast. But you are right there will always be newer and better viruses (Some even invented by the anti-virus developers - job security)...

If I had it my way, every box I touch would have Linux on it.

If every machine started using linux then there would be endless amounts of virus infected scrips and prorams, just like windows

That's probably true, but as long as Linux's slice of the OS pie stays lower than Windows, and there are lots of people building Linux (not just using it), Winblows is probably going to remain the most malware prone. (There's really no hope for IE, though.)

True.

But with Linux I get to control which ports are available, I get to build my own custom firewall. I get to choose how it functions.

With Windows, I get green or red, & I don't have the faintest idea or slightest bit of control over the firewall of my OS.

I do agree, although Windows is changing if you look at the Vista firewall. You get a lot more control in Vista.

I personally use NOD32 anti virus, although not free I personally swear by it and it isn't really expensive when you think about it either. It also uses the lowest system resources I have seen yet in an anti virus.

AVG around the 6 era was OK but did miss viruses, now it is bloated and misses far too much.

I haven't had a lot of experience with Avast! but from what I have heard it is pretty good for free antivirus.
