Cpu Temp, Cpu Fan Speed

Posted 21 July 2003 - 01:46 PM

Ok here's the thing.

I've recently noticed that my CPU's temp is an average 65C... From what I do know about CPU temperatures, my CPU temp is VERY high :(

Temperature when Win2k finishes startup is 60C.
Max temperature it reached (that I have seen) is 69C...

CPU fan speed is between 3050 rpm and 3300 rpm.

I'm gonna get a new fan, for sure, but which one?

Does anyone know why the CPU temp may be so high?

Outside temperature during the day is about 26C-28C

Is This A Good Question/Topic? 0

did you mess with the CPU recently? You may need a new lawer of coolent junk.
Mostlikely the sensor on your board is shot and mis reporting...

Messed with the computer? No.
I did install a new BIOS... well the @BIOS program did from Gigabyte. Would that have changed something?

64C is about average for an AMD w/a decent HS+F (I'm running a Volcano 7+ HSF & routinely hit the mid-60s all day.) IIRC, Athlons can be run as hot as 100C before experiencing problems.

I wouldn't really worry about it much. Athlons run hot anyway, so w/o going for some extreme active cooling (water block, liquid nitrogen, etc.) you're not really going to drop your temps.

But if you're still worried about it, ThermalTake made (still makes?) the Volcano line which includes a seperate thermister for the CPU (when the temp goes up, the fan increases to 5000rpm). They move a ton of air, but are noisy (I'm running 3 of them & Aki is almost as loud as a refrigerator). Another TT line to look at might be the SubZero4G (PCI controlled HSF w/peltier cold plate (and the handy external power conn. so you don't have to upgrade PSUs!))

I'm running a 2100+ at a steady 35C (I lie it has been about 40C all summer with the ambient temp in the room about 45C).
I've never seen it go above 45C even with the stock cooler and prolonged 100% CPU activity. Why are some getting so hot.

As an aside, I have no idea what you mean by stock HSF. Are these OEM machines, or customs?

Since I built my AthXP2000+ almost a year ago, I've never seen the temp drop below 60C (except during winter, w/the heat off). Instead, I was trying to point out the the 60C range isn't detrimental to performance (other than a trivial amount of energy lost to heat; a subject better featued in an extreme cooling thread).

I am interested in what you are running to keep you systems so cool though. Any givers?

<edit> Ok, I figured out what ya'll meant by the stock fan. My 2000 didn't come with one (Enthusiast Incentive: 50% any HSF in stock). I truely am suprised that the stock fan performs so much better than the TT Volcano 7+. </edit>
