New Acer Aspire Vista does not connect

Posted 05 January 2009 - 02:52 PM

Hi everyone,

Having been a network tech for a long time my wife purchaced a new Acer Aspire M5641 and called me in to troubelshoot the network connection.

I went in to network connection and verified the IP addres, Subnet mask DNS1 and DNS2 addressres she put in and it pretty much matched my networks address. I checked the packet TX/RX rate and see that it is sending out packet frames but not reciving them. Ipconfig said that media was disconected. I know that the molded patch cable was known to be working so hooked my laptop up to it and went onto the internet just fine.

Now I never did verify that both work stations can see each other in the same work group and mabey I should try that. Never less, All tcp/ip settings seem to be correct.

This is a static tcp/ip network running on 192.168.x.x

I looked in google and mostly got feedback on laptop made by acer with this issue but no desktops. Perhaps there is changes made to the lattest incarnation of vista where connectivity though a FW/Proxy is a issue on its part?

If you have seen this issue please give me a idea on what it could be.

Thanks :)

I'm not sure of Vista, but with XP a common problem for some home users they would have their Ethernet card (somehow) disabled in the control panel/networking setup. Again, I'm not sure how you would check that in Vista, or if it's even still an option, but it might be worth looking into.

Also check the bios & make sure that the onboard Ethernet is enabled.

Actually I should have looked at the bios. Will give that a shot and see what I come up with.

Update!

As of late last night spent some time on the PC and after playing with the rj45 jack looked inside the rj45 ethernet female jack that is part of the motherboard and found one pin pushed all the way back. This is the way it came from the factory. This is rare and why it was difficult to pinpoint the issue. My guess is this was one of the two paid be it the transmit or reciever pair used across the cat 5 wiring.

:)
