Don't be a stereotypical geek. You know the M.O. No social skills. Shy. Withdrawn. Locked up in a small office banging out code all night with a 6 pack of Coke (or Mountain Dew).

We get so many new members here at Dream.In.Code and when they take the time to introduce yourself, they would really like to feel welcomed But what's this you say? I don't have anything in common with them? Sure you do. First off, you're both here at Dream.In.Code because you probably... code. So ask them what they program in, or what they do for a living, or how they got in to programming.

Don't just copy/paste the same boring welcome message. If you want to be a DIC greeter, take the time to reply to each persons introduction. You don't have to reply to every one of them. And whatever you do, don't reply to more than a few at a time, it annoys people looking at the "View New Posts" page when you flood it with 20 replies to introductions. Just have fun with it and make people feel welcome!

Ask the people that just say "Hi" to tell a little about themselves.

The introduce yourself forum is our front door. So show our new members what DIC is all about and welcome them to our community! You never know, you might meet a new friend or someone that can help you with your own projects.

Oh, and about that DIC Greeter thing. If you don't mind taking the time to genuinely welcome people to dream.in.code, then I don't mind genuinely giving you a free DIC++ subscription and the "Greeter" badge if you don't already have a badge

Oh, one other thing. Unlike being a Walmart greeter, you don't have to be over the age of 65 or harass people when they try to bring stuff in to the store with them

It seems to me that just a few questions per thread are enough. It might be kind of overwhelming when you're new, having tons of questions thrown at you, especially if you're a shy geek.

Me too. I've tried to always get in a few welcomes in the intro forum a week to help do my part but I'm probably guilty of being too generic or giving the same old 'hi and hope to see you around the forums' message.

I'll try to mix it up a bit and help out, also not for the badge but just to help ppl feel welcome But hey can u ever have too many badges??!

You can only have two, including your DIC++ badge. You'll lose your Contributor badge if you get the Greeter one.
